Kyron McMaster ‘crash’ dashes VI Pan Am medal hopes

- fails to finish in final after winning heat with new National 400m Hurdles record

Day two of the Pan Am Junior Championships unfolded on Saturday August 1, 2015 with both Kyron McMaster and Nelda Huggins reaching the final of the 400m Hurdles and 200m respectively, but then unable to end the Virgin Islands’ Pan Am Games medal drought.

In the 200m, Huggins reached the final after running 24.13 in Heat 3. Team mate Taylor Hill was scratched from the event. Then in the final Huggins came home 6th in a time of 24.08.

In the 400m, McMaster, in lane 4 in the 400m Hurdles heat, ran the fastest time of all competitors, 50.16, to record a Personal Best and romp into the final. His run was described as a “great performance and showing great form” by the commentators.

However, even though he was looking like the best bet for the territory’s first ever Pan Am Games medal, disaster struck on the last bend of the final and McMaster crashed out after hitting a hurdle.

In Field Events, both Trevia and Tynelle Gumbs took part in the Discus, with just Tynelle progressing into the second round after Trevia fouled all three of her throws.

According to the commentators, "if she moves quicker across the circle, Tynelle Gumbs could become a good thrower and the pride of the Virgin Islands." Tynelle finished 6th with a 43.88 throw.

Action today, August 2, 2015 focuses on Jonel Lacey and Lakeisha ‘Mimi’ Warner in the 400m Hurdles.

Keep pushing those times Mac. With more competition, those PBs will get lower. You will join that sub-50 group soon.

Berth Henley still remains after twenty seven years the only BVI athlete to achieve success at the Panam games.

Berth was playing soft ball in PanAm games. Give it a damn break. What have u done for this country other than pay tax if you do that at all.

Yes he won the best pitcher in 1988 when the BVI came fourth. You all to bad minded instead tell your government to take sports seriously our athletes need to be training 12 hrs a day twelve months a year. Instead they are just doing an afternoon thing after work. BVI needs to get serious about sports

Congrats to ALL the athletes. The games may not have reflected your true potential, but you tried. To the BVIAA president it is suggested you are more supportive of your athletes. Your commentary on FB (which was eventually taken down)does not reflect support. When an athlete feel your support they will in turn give you 100%. A president is suppose to fight for their athletes..not tear them down (so sad). To the government of the BVI the children and Coaches are doing great with what they have..imagine what they could do if you were to really invest in them? The track need a facelift, and equipment that will be able to assist with training. It's time to start assisting and not just taking the credit when they hit the world stage.
