ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Secretary of the BVI Softball Association Mrs Marietta Flax-Headley has confirmed that the lights have been turned back on at the Softball Field in Road Town and as such the launch of the season and opening games will take place tonight June 26, 2015.

“The lights have been put back on. So the games will go on tonight from 7:00 pm,” said Mrs Flax-Headley in a telephone call to this news site.

Earlier today, it was not clear whether the games would have been played since the power to the field had been cut.

A former member of the Softball Association also confirmed this news. “Softball is on for tonight. The lights have been put back on. It will commence with a rematch from the men's and women's teams from 2014. The women's game will begin at 7:00 pm and the men's game at 9 pm,” said Rhodni A. Skelton, a member of the national softball team.

He said that one of the matchup will be between Neville ‘Sheep’ Smith against Allen Woodrow Smith, with Power Outage against Pirates.

He said that the matchup last year saw the two teams go seven games with Power Outage taking the first three games.

“Pirates came back and won the next three games and then there was a thrilling game seven in which Power Outage was able to secure the championship. So the big matchup between the two best male pitchers will happen tonight at 9:00 pm,” he said.

Lights cut @ Softball Field; League launch tonight uncertain

- Chairman of the BVI Recreation Trust Roy N. Barry said his agency is not responsible for lights

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The launch of the BVI Softball Association season is uncertain for this evening June 26, 2015 due to the lights being off at the Softball Field in Road Town.

Secretary of the BVI Softball Association, Marietta Flax-Headley told this news site that because of the lights being cut at the Softball Field the Association had to postpone the launch of their season last week and it is unclear whether the lights will be on for the planned launch this evening.

“We were scheduled to open on the 20th of June after several postponements and we were unable to open due to the fact that the electricity to the softball field had been cut. We were scheduled to open today and we are not sure whether it would be postponed or cancelled for this year since the lights are not on as yet,” said Mrs Flax-Headley.

She said the Association had already postponed the opening to do some work on the grounds of the field prior to last week’s postponement.

“So the League is in jeopardy of being postponed again or cancelled if there is no power,” Mrs Flax-Headley said.

When contacted for a comment today, Chairman of the BVI Recreation Trust Roy N. Barry said the lights for the facility do not fall under the purview of the Trust. He said they are just responsible for the upkeep of the facility.

He could not say who was responsible for the maintenance of the lights or for ensuring that the lights are kept on.

According to Mrs Flax-Headley, a decision is to be made this afternoon on whether the launch of the League and games scheduled for this evening will go ahead. She said some of the players are from the United States Virgin Islands and were awaiting a decision to know whether they should make the trip to Tortola for the games.

Softball, once the premier sport in the BVI, is on life support and dying on the vine. It is dying due to poor planning, organizing, managerial and resource support over the years. Managing and maintaining a softball facility is not a heavy lift and should be a function and process that we should be able to manage and operate well. Hope that this is not emblematic of the course of actions in the way forward. Let the games begin!
