PARAQUITA BAY, Tortola, VI- Winner of the second Open 2-mile race for women in the HLSCC/Highland Spring Race Series on Tortola, Juliane Potgieter has expressed surprise at her winning time on Saturday October 12, 2013.

“I didn’t know I could have run that fast. When I looked at the time, it was a minute faster than the last time so I am quite surprised,” Potgieter told Virgin Islands News Online.

Potgieter crossed the finish line in 14:04.08 ahead of Clare Louise-Whiley (15:06.21) and Kelsha Fortune (15:30.76) to better her winning time of 15:03:00 in the first race on September 20, 2013.

She also said she has been troubled by an Achilles tendon problem but realised the faster she ran the least painful the injury was.

Potgieter ran her first race in the Virgin Islands in June and also came in second in the third race of the CERES JUICES 10k race series held in Carrot Bay on September 14, 2013.

“I jogged for years but it was only in June that I did my first race and I was impressed with the speed of the women and the men here and the atmosphere was so nice.”

She said she will definitely be participating in the next 10K of the CERES JUICES series on Saturday October 19, 2013 at Beef Island.

Meanwhile, defending champion Khiry Creque also won his race on Saturday last but his time was slower than the first. His winning time was 11:34.93, some 9 seconds behind his previous time.

Guy Williamson placed second in 11:38.28, Tarique Moses was third in 11:39.06 followed by Reuben Stoby 11:57.32, Ravndra Sukhu 12:18.68, Zebalon McClean 12:57.63 and James Carr 13:02.79.

“I did better in the last race but it was still a good race today…I am just trying to get better every race,” Creque told Virgin Islands News Online.

The defending champion, who has been taking part in the race series since as a primary school student, said the race route was one of the better routes in the VI and noted the days when parts of it was unpaved and athletes had to run on a very rough surface. “Most people wouldn’t know about that but I have been running this race since I was small, this same course, since primary school days and I am 21 now.”

Considered one of the most decorated athletes in the series since he has one all of the age groups he has participated in over the years, Creque said he is using the 2-mile races as preparation for the upcoming track season.

“I just want to stay healthy, run good and represent my country to the best of my ability and make it to the Olympics one day.”

Meanwhile, A’Keela McMaster won the one-mile for girls and Johari Lacey for the boys to stir things up in that division.

In the Cross country (team section), there was significant growth in the Community Partners category with seven groups participating. However, it was team Road Town Wholesale that took the win in race two, followed very closely by team HLSCC.

In the primary section, Derek Pettigrew put down another remarkable time as the lead runner for the entire cross country group, but without a full team, Team Althea Scatliffe- 2 continues to dominate and with the arrival of Alexandrina Maduro Primary in full force Team Althea Scatliffe-1 in particular needs to watch out.

In the secondary division and with still no real competition, the leader remains Cedar School led by Liam Blok and similarly the Rotary Club of Tortola also remains dominant with some very strong women (Ixora Williams and Stacy Wynter) which is strategically key to this category, which requires that a female is a part of the team.

Races return to Virgin Gorda next Saturday October 19 for their final race and awards ceremony.

The next Paraquita Bay race will be on Saturday October 26 and all participants are asked to bring a donation in support of the BVI Cancer Society as HLSCC joins in assisting them in their cause.

All participants are also invited right after to the BVI Olympic Committee’s fundraising breakfast and interactive exhibit at the Tortola Sports Club as part of their awareness campaign for The Winter Olympic Games Sochi 2014, The Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay, and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in which the Virgin Islands will be represented by qualified athletes.
