UPDATE - Hundreds flock Virgin Gorda for Easter Parade [Photo-slide Included]

The parade attracted participation from Tortola, St. Thomas and St. Croix.
SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI – All ferry routes led to Virgin Gorda yesterday April 9, 2012 for the highly anticipated Easter parade, which brought the curtain down on the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival.

Hundreds lined the streets in scorching sun from Lee Road to the Leon ‘Kinny’ Creque Festiville to get a glimpse of the colourful revellers as they pranced and gyrated in their various costumes.

According to Chairperson of the Parade Sub-Committee of the Virgin Gorda Festival and Fairs Committee, Melrona George, there were some 24 entries, 6 more than last year.

The parade attracted participation from Tortola, St. Thomas and St. Croix and among the troupes that took to the streets were Sailing Around Divas and Crew, which probably had the most participants and really gave the parade colour and style with their sailor costumes. There were also a few Popeyes in the mix.

There were Rosewood Little Dix Bay Hotel, who dedicated their participation in memory of the late Mr. Darvin George; Little Beavers; The Moko Jumbies, Paradise Jammerz; Delta Petroleum Ltd, which only had a handful of participants compared to last year; Sebastian Majorettes; Rising Stars (St. Thomas) Buck’s Supermarket and Althea Scatliffe Primary School, which was one of three school entries.

The various pageant queens in the Territory were also a part of the parade including Miss Teen Virgin Gorda, Tanieka Gludd.

The procession got underway just after 1 p.m. and was spared by the weather after there were some morning showers that threatened to put a damp on things. The general opinion from spectators was that the turnout of spectators was good and also the participation from children in the parade was commendable.

Rosemary, who said she is from Europe, told Virgin Islands News Online that she was impressed with the moves and skills of the Sebastian Majorettes, which she noted comprised of little children. David, also a tourist, said the parade was colourful and exciting.

Jennifer, who said she is from Virgin Gorda, said the parade was “ok” but thought that last year’s was better. She said the participation was lacking although there were a few good troupes such as the Sailing Around Divas and Crew and the Rosewood Little Dix Bay Hotel.

Chairperson of the Parade Sub-Committee of the Virgin Gorda Festival and Fairs Committee, Melrona George had told Virgin Islands News Online she was very impressed with the amount of entries and the participation from Tortola and St. Thomas.

“Although there are 24 entries some of them have been divided into groups and judging from the entries, it appears to be a very colourful parade so I would encourage the public to come out and enjoy,” she had said.

Three judges were positioned at the road corner in the vicinity of Scotiabank and of course the troupes were required to do a performance there, which made it the ideal location for spectators.
