SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – Organisers have related that none of the horses billed to participate in races at Ellis Thomas Downs today, January 26, 2014 have been scratched for any of the races up to post time.

Vice President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Mr Lesmore Smith, in expressing hopes for continued good weather stated that he hoped that there will be a good turn out by fans for today's races and said that vendors were already packing away in preparation for the day's activities.

Smith also spoke of the hype created by several rivalries between the horses and said this was one thing fans could look out for to be maintained once conditions remained favourable. These included duels between Stephen Got Better and Mae Ruler and another between Miss Homer and Orithiya.

The VI Classic is being held for the first time this year in the Territory and involves participation from at least eleven horses coming from St Thomas and St Croix combined.

Keen rivalry expected for today's VI Classic!

- Ellis Thomas Downs to come alive for first horse races of 2014

SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – All systems are a go for this today's VI Classic slated to be held at Ellis Thomas Downs and according to Vice President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Mr Lesmore Smith, all the main contestants have arrived in racing condition.

Eight horses arrived from St Thomas and another three from St Croix for the horse races to be held today, January 26, 2014 in Sea Cows Bay.

Despite some weather concerns, Smith said preparations are ongoing at the track and indicated that all the necessary things are going to be in place come race day to ensure that the fans and horse owners can have an enjoyable time.

He opined that the turnout should be great as all the horses for the major races  made it to Tortola safely, “All the key players are here,” Smith noted.

A key contest is expected between two of the horses in particular, Mae Ruler and Stephen Got Better, especially following a recent duel between the two which resulted in a win for Mae Ruler after a fall by Stephen Got Better.

Owner of Stephen Got Better, Mr Rodney Simmons, shared that his horse was the faster of the two and he expected to gain a comfortable win for the Boy’s Stables team.

Meanwhile, Smith, while expressing that everyone was hyped ahead of the races, noted that most horses will be meeting each other for the first time in the feature race.

Fans will also remember the recent nail biter that played out during the Boxing Day races at the Downs where the finish went right down to the wire between Miss Homer, the eventual winner by a nose, and Orithiya. Another keen contest is expected as the two face off again in Sunday’s races.

Smith said he hoped for good weather come Sunday and encouraged the fans to come out in their numbers to make the event a successful one.
