UPDATE: Horse racing card postponed yet again at Ellis Thomas Downs

- New date yet to be announced
Sunday October 7, 2012 was pencilled in as the date for the next horse race meet at Ellis Thomas Downs, however, St. Thomas reportedly indicated to the VI Horse Owners' Association that they would not be able to participate, forcing yet another postponement. Photo: VINO/File
SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI – Horse racing fans here in the Virgin Islands will have to wait some more before they can witness another "sport of kings" at Ellis Thomas Downs in Sea Cows Bay since the race card scheduled for Sunday, October 7, 2012 has been called off.

The races, which are part of the VI Horse Owners Association's calender of events, were originally set for Sunday, September 30, 2012 but was then pushed back to October 7, 2012.

But President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Lesmore Smith, told Virgin Islands News Online today October 2, 2012 that the races have been called off since participation from St. Thomas, USVI, was not forthcoming.

Mr. Smith added that the horse owners association in St. Thomas had informed him that they would not have been able to fully participate since most of its members had already obgligated themselves to another "function".

He once again said he wished to apologise to the public.

Asked about a possible new date, Mr. Smith said he could not give a date at this time.

The exact reason for the race card being cancelled the first time is still not clear since Mr. Smith had only said “As a result of a meeting with horse owners, which just concluded, the race will be cancelled. I have nothing else to say but to apologise to the public”, when contacted.

That gives a few extra days to try and get rid of some of those ticks and fleas, but wont change the fact that these animals are too old to be running around the track with midgets in clown suits riding them.

I hear a rumour that when our Cricket stadium is finally built it will be officially open by Viv Richards - I bet you all can't wait for that. What a paaaarty! And so many girls will be there. Not like fleabag racing which attracts 4 or 5 people with an average age of 63 1/2
