ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Jamaican Collin Green, who pleaded guilty in the High Court to the charge of having unlawful sex with a girl under the age of 16 years, was sentenced to seven (7) years in prison when he appeared before Justice Albert Redhead today, July 12, 2013.

Green was given the maximum sentence by Justice Redhead who said his hands were tied considering the fact that the court had to accept a guilty plea of the lesser offence of unlawful sex with a minor on the grounds that the victim was too traumatized to face the defendant in the court to give evidence.

When he appeared in the High Court on Monday July 8, 2013 Green pleaded not guilty to the charge of rape of a minor. He however, pleaded guilty to the charge of having unlawful sex with a girl under the age of 16 years.

The offence was allegedly committed on August 7, 2012.

"My hands are tied. I am annoyed that my hands are tied because I could assure you that you would have gotten the upper rod," Justice Redhead told Green.

The learned judge added that women have no right to be abuses and its time men recognise that fact. He added that Green had betrayed the trust of the family and at the time of the incident the child was asleep.

"No matter what Mr Daniels (Green's lawyer) may have to say I have made up my mind that he will be getting the maximum but it hurts me, it really hurts me that I cannot give more than seven years in this case, it really hurts me, he would have been getting the upper end," Redhead reiterated.

In the case of rape, the maximum sentence would have been life in prison while in the in the case of unlawful sex the minimum is five years and the maximum seven years.
