ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Students and even some parents found out that reading is fun and fundamental when Family Literacy Night was held yesterday October 19, 2012 at the 'Home of the Striders", Althea Scatliffe Primary School.

The school hosted the event in keeping with the Ministry of Education and Culture's theme this year “Creating a culture of excellence" as well as part of the Reading is Fun week of activities.

It began with brief reading sessions that featured a storybook themed poem by Ms BVI 2012, Sharie de Castro and a few “Boysie” stories by local author Mrs Jennie Wheatley.

Principal of the School, Mrs Marietta Flax-Headley, thought the attendance was "great" and was pleased to see the interactive sessions with the teachers and the way the programme came together. Mrs Flax-Headley also led a session with a younger group who seemed a very animated bunch and got very involved in the stories that were read to them.

There were at least two parenting sessions, one of which was titled “Raising Reluctant Readers”. This was geared particularly towards giving parents tools to help students who are reluctant to read for various reasons. Parents interacted with teachers, who led the session by offering guidelines on how to arrive at solutions to the reading issues that children experience.

Many of the children displayed their excitement as stories were read to them in various groups in classrooms with some teachers even getting into character to do the readings.

In addition, there were book bingo and book jeopardy as well as a movie, Charlotte’s web, which is based on a novel of the same name.

The event featured book exchanges where students brought books they were willing to give up and exchanged them for others that fellow students had brought.

Assistant Principal of the school, Ms Orlandette Crabbe related that “Our aim is to make reading appear as something that the children can enjoy, we want to show the children the other side.” She expressed that many times in the classroom there was need to focus on phonetic skills and the actual reading that may seem monotonous to the children.

Ms Trisha Smith, a guidance counsellor at the school, assisted with the organization of the event and felt it was a good initiative to get parents to be more interactive in encouraging their children to read more.

A fair number of parents and other members of the community turned out to support the event and some felt it was a good initiative to encourage both younger and older children with their reading.

Help please. Change Miss BVI crown. Let alone it is way to big for her and it is very ugly. Apart from that Miss BVI you are great. Keep up the good work you are representing well. Festival committee cherish her but you got to treat her right.
