PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago — Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Dr Keith C. Rowley Monday night, August 10, 2020, said his ruling People's National Movement (PNM) has won the general elections.

Dr Rowley said that the PNM had won 22 of the 41 seats at stake in the elections. “It was a hard election, in the end we prevailed. Our platform has won and we have a mandate to do what we say we going to do,” he added.

The other major party in the contest, the United National Congress (UNC) has won 19 seats, according to Rowley's statement.

Dr Rowley declared victory as votes were still being tallied, with the final count expected later this week.

"I have always said the people... can be trusted to do the right thing when called upon to do so," he said in the capital Port of Spain.

Demands for recounts by Opposition

But United National Congress (UNC) candidate and former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar refused to concede defeat and told reporters her party will demand recounts on three seats -- the number required to take power.

Dr Rowley was quick to thank his supporters after the polls closed, saying older people may have shied from voting because of coronavirus concerns.

"Our young people have come to the fore," he said, "this victory is the result of the participation of our young people."

"The future of Trinidad and Tobago is bright."

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) has so far not made any preliminary or official announcement of the elections.

T&T votes today, August 10, 2020

Against the backdrop of a global pandemic and more recently, a rise in COVID-19 cases on the islands, eligible voters in Trinidad and Tobago cast their ballots to decide who will be tasked with moving the twin island republic forward.

Some 1,134,136 people are eligible to cast ballots at the estimated 2,200 polling stations.

Today, the incumbent People’s National Movement (PNM) will try to hold on to its 23 seats, as well as wrest more from the grip of the opposition United National Congress (UNC) and the Congress of the People (COP).

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) said it has been working with the Ministry of Health, putting in place protocols to govern Election Day activities, including the wearing of masks inside the polling station.

COVID-19 platform

Prime Minister Dr Keith C. Rowley has urged the population to follow the protocols being outlined by the EBC urging them to take the threat of COVID-19 seriously.

“There are people who believe that they must put their finger in the wound to believe that there could be pain,” Rowley said in a statement. “If there are people who decide that this is a joke then they must be made to understand that this is not a joke, and it is not a dare and double dare, and it is not machismo — it is common sense,” he said.

On the UNC’s side, political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar slammed the government’s response to COVID-19 at every turn, and promised on the political platform to increase testing for the virus and to bring home nationals still outside the country’s closed borders.

Persad-Bisessar also vowed to reduce taxes, create 50,000 jobs and resuscitate the sugar industry in Trinidad and Tobago.

According to the EBC, over 1.1 million citizens are eligible to vote in this year’s election. 146 candidates from 19 political parties, and four Independents will be contesting the 41 constituencies across Trinidad and Tobago.

Good day. When you want to make a point, please do so properly. The country is Trinidad and Tobago, not just Trinidad. Also, if you choose to criticize its leadership, please get your facts straight because your point doesn't hold water, just full of irrelevance.

You seem not to be aware of what occurs in that country but used this forum to express a rather profoundly dull opinion. Get your facts straight, get a hold of yourself because you will be viewed as unwise. What can you tell me about Trinidad and Tobago? Population size, the various religious groups, the various ethnicities there, governmental model, their military size, the GDP
      etcetera.

Yuh outta place and outta timing to bash any of the country's leaders. Ah setta rum talk wit u. "Just stay out ah d people business!"

For 5 long months your ppl were performing their robbery infront of the whole world to rig the March 2 Guyana election until God said enough 'nomore robbing'.because right must prevail over wrog. So, why did Lo Lo made up the report correct this time since he knew it was not right? The fact that he eventually made up the report to reflect the recount figures after so long showed clearly they were bullying their way into a win. And you my friend is exhibiting your tolerance for racial and rigged elections. The wold will never sit right with ppl.of your mentality...
