ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Contemporary Virgin Islands artist Desiree Smith had an exhibition of her work at the Bamboushay Lounge in Road Town on Thursday evening August 28, 2014 and art lovers came out in numbers to see her pieces, mainly centred on modern pop culture.

As persons came they sought to take photographs with Smith near her artwork and speak with her about the significance of the pieces and what it entailed to produce them.

Her centerpiece for the evening was a new painting she did called Magna Carta and based an album by hip hop icon Jay Z.

“I am very excited tonight. I can see the crowd streaming and people showing interest and smiling and congratulating me, so I’m very excited,” Smith said at the exhibition.

“This is a really good demonstration of the type of work that I am doing and I am very happy so far with the evening and I am sure it will get much much better,” she said, as persons continued to stream in to see the pieces.

She described her signature piece for the evening, the Magna Carta. This is based on Jay Z’s album. It is the biggest piece in the collection and it took me the most time. But it gave me the most inspiration,” she said.

“I noticed that people are gravitating to it maybe because of the colour and the variation of all the styles that they see contained therein. It seems to be getting the appeal that I wanted it to have,” said Smith.

Comtemporary VI artist to showcase work tomorrow

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Desiree Smith, a contemporary artist from the Virgin Islands will tomorrow Thursday August 28, 2014 host an exhibition of her work at the Bamboushay Lounge on Water Front Drive.

Speaking with this news site yesterday August 26, 2014, Smith said that she aims to expose her art to the public through the exhibition and she promises contemporary art which she describes as pop culture with a Virgin Islands twist.

“Since January 2014 I came up with the idea to have this show in August,” she said. “I would describe my art as contemporary pop art that references pop culture, representing iconic persons, elements, figures and brands in popular culture,” said Smith.

She said that at the exhibition she will be revealing some pieces not seen before.

Smith, an accomplished academic, has a career in graphics design and considers herself to have been an artist all her life. She also does costume designs for pageant contestants.

Looking at the artwork one gets a sense that they all tell a story of the subject in a simple yet compelling way. Some of the pieces can be considered abstract while some of them can be said to be actual in their representation.
