PORT PURCELL, Tortola, VI – The vessel ‘Krautsand’, in which cocaine was discovered while at Port Purcell, Tortola had sailed to the Virgin Islands from Trinidad and Tobago, according to Commissioner of Police Michael B. Matthews.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF) on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 said 44.20 kg of cocaine was seized on the vessel during a joint operation involving RVIPF and Her Majesty’s Customs on Thursday July 18, 2019.

“Motor vessel ‘KRAUTSAND’ came to the BVI from Trinidad. The cargo contained building materials,” Commissioner Matthews told Virgin Islands News Online.

According to marinetraffic.com, Krautsand, built in 1950, is a "general cargo vessel" with its home port being Georgetown, Guyana.

Authorities in Guyana have said ‘Krautsand’ departed the capital city, Georgetown, in mid-June for Trinidad and Tobago.

And, according to Mr Matthews, a number of persons have been interviewed but “no arrests made at this stage.”

“Enquiries are still ongoing,” Commissioner Matthews noted.

The cocaine seized reportedly has a street value of over $500,000.
