ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The decomposing body recovered by police on March 30, 2016 at Hawk’s Nest on the eastern end of Tortola is yet to be identified, although police say they have been in communication with the family of Nickera Smith who has been missing since January 27, 2016.

Speculation has been rife that the body is that of 22 year-old Smith, who has been missing without a trace. Several searches on the island of Tortola have come up empty handed.

The Royal Virgin Islands Police said its officers from the force’s Major Crime Team continue their investigations into the discovery of the body of a female.

“The matter has been reported to the Coroner who has ordered an autopsy to ascertain the cause of death. The RVIPF have a number of lines of enquiry including that of missing 22-year-old Nickera Smith who was last seen on 27 January 2016,” a press release from the RVIPF today, April 1, 2016 stated.

Acting Commissioner of Police Alwin James noted that further forensic investigations will need to be carried out to satisfy the Coroner of both the identity and cause of death of the deceased woman. This will be completed by a forensic pathologist from overseas.

Police say they have kept the family of Nickera Smith informed of the circumstances through the Police Liaison Officer and will continue to support and "provide updates as the family go through this difficult time."

The Major Crime Team is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious around the Hawk’s Nest area on the eastern end of Tortola over the past few weeks to please contact detectives within the Major Crime Team directly at 284-368-5682 or the RVIPF Intelligence Unit at 284-368-9339. Persons may choose to report the information anonymously to Crimestoppers through its Miami-based hotline number 800-TIPS (8477).

All information will be treated in confidence.

Decomposing body found in Hawk's Nest

Police have confirmed that a decomposing body was recovered today March 30, 2016 in the Hawk's Nest area on the eastern end of Tortola.

This was confirmed today by Police Press and Information Officer Diane Drayton who said too that investigations are ongoing.

“I can confirm that human remains were recovered in the Hawk's Nest area which is on the eartern end of Tortola,” she said.

“Investigations are ongoing,” Drayton confirmed.

Speculation is rife that the remains are of a female.

    I am afraid BVI has changed and crime is rampant. Proper security of citizens and residents, in particular the vulnerable is at an all time low. Why do we pay taxes if we cannot get the protection we deserve. I am afraid the police and authorities that be need to step up their act and go after the wrong doers, lock them up, and throw away the keys because lots of people from all walks of life are taking advantage of the vulnerable and getting away with murder!

        These days you have to be careful and trust no one. I'm a single female, I don't trust anyone, I am always aware of my surroundings and who I associate myself with. And trust me I always carry pepper spray or something else I will not mention. Anyone try anything I am going to shot them down in a blaze.

      I do agree some police do need to stop this lazy trend and do their jobs but it's also safe to say that we are in the last days and things are going to happen. There's nothing nice about it and the system does need to improve. However humans will be humans that is why it is right to abide by Jehovah's will. Cover your family/loved ones/yourself etc in prayer. (NOT IMPLYING THAT THESE PEOPLE DID NOT DO SUCH).

If it turn out to be the young lady and foul play was involved, I also believe the person responsible was right there with the search party looking for the young lady acting like they were concerned all along knowing what was up.         @wize up, I am studying criminal forensics. The killer is someone who is familiar with the victim. Most of the time when their is a search party, the killer/killers is involved with the search party. The killer/killers is observing everything, acting like a Good Samaritan, and observing the tactics used by the people searching so they can stay one step ahead of the situation and have their bases covered.

      If that's the case, police need to question everyone who was in the search party(especially the suspicious looking ones),The guilty party always looks suspicious, you just got to read the body language and also question her friends. someone had to know something, maybe not the full story but something. If it had anyone new in her life or a love interest. Parents you need to be more involved in your kid's lives where they feel comfortable in telling you anything. My mother would always say before you leave the house, tell someone where you are going and who you are going with.

          @hmm?..yes you have to be involved in your kids lives to an extent. My daughter is grown and she still tells me where she is going and with whom, she has her privacy yes, but she is comfortable with letting me know her whereabouts. Better safe than sorry.

    This is very, very sad. Our little island has sooooo much unsolved killings. We need to close our entry ports from letting in all these killers, rapist and child predators in. Then we could than weed out our own. The government needs to bring the death penalty back, then they will think twice about killing someone.
    Lord give this family strength to deal with this. And I ask that the person or persons involved in this crime would be caught. In Jesus name. Amen.

    @peace, trust me, If the crime scene unit go through the area with a fine tooth comb, the are going to find some evidence or DNA belonging to the victim and the perp. I have a strong feeling they are going to solve this one. If it was that young lady, someone that she knew did her harm.why? Because she knew the person.

    To the killer(s) of this person, yes I believe this person was killed. You can run but you canot hide. You are going to see the person in your sleep, when you sit down to eat a meal. When you see the person family, you are going to shake like a leaf and your mouth is going to go dry. I really hope that you are reading these blogs, I believe you are.     Please get a print out of her phone calls. Go around the homes in that area and see if anyone has a camera to see who were there recently. I find it strange that a young lady was missing so long and only now people smell the body. If it turns out to be the young lady that's missing, I think someone had her kidnapped for a while before killing her and disposing of the body.

    Whoever harm that woman is someone she knows and maybe trust. A killer don't pick any random person. She knew the person. They got rid of her because they were afraid she would expose them. But, there is a god and he saw everything. Justice will be served for her if not by the earthly judge it was be served by the heavenly judge. Oh MR.     That poor girl knew who killed her. That is the reason they got rid of her. Someone mentioned she borrowed money from the bank. To the person who bought harm to the woman, god is watching your every move. You will not be able to function because you will see that woman face everywhere you go. When you look in the mirror, she is going to be standing right behind you. You are going to hear her cries when you are trying to go to sleep. You are going to run crazy.     @one eye, this is not just anyone who did this, this person knew that woman. She had to have known the person. No one is going to go off or meet up with someone they do not know.     I was in a similar situation In Trinidad a taxi took me away to rape me . I fought each time he try to throw me on the ground I begged I saw myself dead n my parents crying for me I got a lash on head and knocked out briefly woke up to being tied with his vest I began fighting n praying I pray I never loose faith I plead the blood of Jesus n something happen the man stop trying to tie my hand looked up n his eye watching something what ever it was he got so scared he ran In his car n drive off all I saw was dust.. I didn't take no chance alone in that cane field I began running away from where we came Incase he turn back to kill me .. I was happy to know I was not rape cause the morning I return with police we found his shirt he took of to tie my hand then a police woman hug me n say child u are lucky she point to a spot n said we took 2 ladies body's up right here raped n killed left work in a taxi never return n they belived it's him till this day I don't know if dey ever caught him but things like this makes me angry n hurt tears flowing down my cheek as I write this I was only 14 Coming from school I serve a living God .. He answers pray never give up keep the faith no matter what shout the blood of Jesus there is nothing more powerful than those words I saw it many times . Wish I could of tell u the rest of how much hrs I took Running n walking through cane I was lost again i ask God to lead me I was far away from home or anyone till I got help bear feet shirt on alone bleeding all over from blows trembling and when I reach a house pitbull almost kill me going to the main road naked in only a shirt not sure who is going to stop is it another rapist when I got to police station I could not believe when I saw my face my body all my finger nail was gone down to flesh bite on my back thank you Jesus I was Alive n was not raped thank you father God those other 2 women never made it
