UPDATE - Bail denied again for DR man in airport jewellery bust!
The second bail application was made yesterday morning, June 14, 2012, two days after the first one was denied. To this end, the 33 year-old will remain a guest at Her Majesty’s prison until June 21, 2012 when his matter is up for report.
Additionally, Traveras, through an interpreter, pleaded not guilty yesterday to four counts of handling stolen goods. He is represented by Stephens Daniels, who this news agency understands, put forward to the court that his client has been locked up since his arrest for the offenses, which the Crown is dealing with summarily.
Despite this, Senior Magistrate Stephens did not budge. At the first bail hearing she did point out that the allegations were “serious and appalling” and added that the DR national was accosted at the airport with alleged stolen goods.
Senior Crown Counsel Christilyn Benjamin, who has command of the case, told the court that on June 7, 2012 at around 7:30 a.m., Pimentel-Traveras was checked by security officers at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport. He had a boarding pass to travel to the Dominica Republic, his homeland.
During a search of his carry on, a large quantity of jewellery and cash were found in the said luggage which raised the suspicion of security personnel.
Officers of the East End Police Station were called in. Shortly after, the DR national was taken to the Road Town Police Station where he allegedly told officers that he purchased the jewellery and someone gave him the money. He also allegedly gave officers a name of an individual.
The Senior Crown Counsel told the court that the defendant had US $9,378 cash; $12 Barbados currency; $2 Trinidad and Tobago dollars; $10 DR notes and $300 Guyana currency.
Officers cross referenced reports of burglaries and called in individuals to make identification on the jewellery that were confiscated. So far, four persons were able to positively pick out gold jewellery, which included earrings, a chain, a pendant and a bracelet that were stolen from their homes. Two were from Nottingham Estate, East End and two from Pockwood Pond.
The court was also notified that Pimentel-Traveras was found with over $8,000 in jewellery.
