UPDATE: Bad weather forces postponement of Labour Day races in St Thomas
Horseracing fans are being advised that the races have now been rescheduled for the following weekend- September 15, 2013.
President of the VI Horse Owners Association Karen Smith-Aaron said the decision was arrived at by the St Thomas Horse Racing Association and expressed hopes that fans would turn out for the now postponed event despite the delay.
She indicated that each of the four horses that had been scheduled to participate in representing the Virgin Islands had already arrived safely in the neighbouring island of St Thomas.
The VI will be represented by Leave It to Bern, Good Boy Daddy, All Country and Winaholic.

Leave It To Bern’ heads VI list in St Thomas Labor Day races
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Boyz stables newly acquired horse, ‘Leave It to Bern’ leads a list of local contenders heading over to neighbouring St Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) for the upcoming Labour Day horse races at the Clinton E. Phipps racetrack on September 8, 2013.
Leave It To Bern is the first to be partially funded through a $10,000 grant given to the local horse owners association, according to President of the VI Horse Owners Association, Mrs Karen Smith-Aaron.
The list also includes three other Tortola horses in Good Boy Daddy, All Country and Winaholic.
Mrs Smith-Aaron said she is looking forward to the horses being competitive and winning some sort of purse in the spirit of inter-island competition especially since this is the first time since April they would be competing off island.
Notably absent is speed demon and this year’s VI Triple Crown Champion, ‘Really Uptown’, which remains out of competition due to injury. The horse’s owner, Violet ‘Letty’ Hodge could not be reached for comment up to post time but previously indicated that her horse was scheduled to be seen by a veterinarian for a precautionary check-up.
Meanwhile, ‘The Beast’ Slevin will contest the 6 furlongs Sprint Classic which features Bambi Bound and Swagg Daddy.
The Joseph ‘Bob’ Love Memorial (1 mile 40 yds) will be contested by Sweet Sight, Break Up The Game (debut), Prince of Speed (debut) and Leave It To Bern for an unknown purse.
The day’s races will feature a one-miler mare/fillies race, The Queen’s First Dance, which is essentially the first leg of the Triple Tiara and the main race of the day.
This will be contested by Mae Ruler, Ohbabyobeyme, Stephen Got Better, One Eye Cap (debut), Imperial Award (St Croix) and Turned to Gold for a $6000 purse.
