ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- As morning breaks, word reaching Virgin Islands News Online is that up to 16 employees of CCT Global Communications have reportedly received termination letters on the basis of redundancy. Their termination date is based on their years of service.

This means each employee may have a different termination date. With so many workers terminated on the basis of redundancy, it is unclear if it has affected the various departments within the organisation such as Roaming, Prepaid, Billing, Corporate Sales or Marketing.

The Company promised to continue the employees’ medical benefits and telephone services through their termination date.

A member of the Board of Directors who spoke to this news site on condition of anonymity said, “it was a difficult decision for all members because we knew it will result in a fall out…it was painful at our meeting on Friday as these are our people…”

But in the end, the Director noted, a decision had to be made to save the investment, and inspire confidence in customers. This meant taking a hard look at strategies, operations and capabilities.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the CCT Board of Directors, Mrs Margaret A. Penn, said she could not verify the number of staff members issued dismissal letters.

She also expressed that the letters received by workers served as the only notice of their dismissals and no prior warning was given.

“The letters,” she said, “it’s quite clear was the notice. We gave notice… as was required, some of them got a month’s notice. Those that were with CCT for many, many years got different notice.”

Commenting on how the company would function effectively in the interim with workers being dismissed, Penn said, “We have done a complete review, we’ve looked at our operations, our capabilities and we’re in the process of transforming the company.”

Penn added, “Unfortunately, having to complete the severance packages yesterday [June 3, 2013], although very painful, is a part of CCT’s evolution.”

The Chairman said the company appreciates the service that employees have given and their dedication but hoped that today would bring the beginning of a new CCT with a streamlined operation so that the company could effectively compete in the telecoms market.

Efforts to reach Labour Minister Dr. the Honourable Kedrick D. Pickering, Minister for Communications and Works Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool and CEO of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) Guy Malone for comments, were unsuccessful.

Chairman of the TRC Board, Ayana Hull, declined to comment.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Labour, Ronald F. Smith-Berkeley said he was made aware of the situation at CCT late yesterday afternoon by the Acting Labour Commissioner. He said the employees could rest assured that in a day or two the Acting Labour Commissioner would be in a position to inform them as to the “next step”.

Opposition Members comment on the CCT situation

Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA said it was “incredible that I could be so right and the Premier could be so wrong about the state of the economy when I told him it was failing and he said it was robust. I think he owes the people of this Territory an explanation as to where he went wrong.”

Hon. Fraser also wanted to know if the affected staff had seen their severance coming.

The former Minister for Communications and Works also said he hoped the company wasn’t downsizing as it would not be speaking well for the Territory. “This is tragic,” Hon. Fraser said of the dismissals.

Second District Representative Honourable J. Alvin Christopher said he was hit with the startling news this morning. He added that he wasn’t fully informed of the details, however, he is of the opinion that it is a time for all to come together to charter a way forward for the economy. “And what we are going to do to stabilise things to stop this trend of unemployment and what plans we are going to adopt as a government to move the country forward?"

Hon. Christopher added that at this juncture all concerned cannot afford to continue to fold hands and do nothing. "We must work together, government and opposition, private and public sector to find a solution and a way forward."

This news site also tried to solicit a comment from Opposition Member Hon. Andrew A. Fahie but he could not be reached as of post time.

Over a dozen workers abruptly terminated at CCT!

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Information reaching Virgin Islands News Online indicates that over a dozen workers have been terminated by CCT Global Communications today, June 3, 2013.

In letters handed out to over a dozen employees today, CCT Global Communications advised staff that they “must reorganize the workforce to compete with the multinational competitors in the BVI telecommunications arena.”

“As a result, we regret to inform you that you are being terminated on the basis of redundancy”. The letter dated June 3, 2013 and signed by General Manager, Jose Luis Fernandez, was obtained by Virgin Islands News Online.

Many of the employees came forward to our news room claiming that there were no prior meetings or any warning or indication that they would be let go based on redundancy.

They also alleged that although the termination will take effect for most in two months from today’s date, effective immediately they are not allowed to return to their CCT work station.

The letter advised them to “immediately return all company property in your possession and to relinquish access to the company premises and systems.”

When contacted, Fernandez would not confirm how many workers were laid off in total or how the layoffs would affect the company in the immediate future. He stated instead, “At this point, the only thing that I can tell you is that CCT has decided to reorganize their workforce to compete effectively in the BVI telecommunications arena.”

Director, Meade Malone referred this news site to Chairman of the Board, Ms Margaret Penn who could not be reached for comment up to post time.

One employee told this news site, “they disabled my card, and all access to the system moments after I got the letter… it's sad how they treated us, some of us being here for 5, 10, 15 years.”

In closing the letter wished them success in their future endeavours.

Why you don't blame See see Tea for not using all that money they were raping us for when there was no competition, to reinvest into a better network. Who will take there hard earned money and put into a company JUST because they are local, when you can get better service elsewhere? Only a fool or a shareholder would do that.

Third District Representative Hon. Julian Fraser, RA had sought an explanation on the correlation or coincidence between the Premier's decision not to fund the Development Fund and what he (Hon. Fraser) characterised as "the failing economy of the Territory" given that the money from the Fund is what is used to finance capital projects, which create jobs.

"And while contrary to what he suggests, the revenues to central government from financial service to date remains robust and tourism figures continue to rise ever since my government took office," said Premier Smith, who also noted that the decision not to fund the Development Fund to the level done for the same period in 2012 is a matter of cash management, "and nothing more”.

I believe it is a her, would bring yourself down o her level. Stand still.

I am sure none of the board members in CCT are in the legislatue and ths some are VIP supporters. I am equally sure that CCT is not the only local or private company to let off workers, nor wil it be the last. Each compny needs to take whatever measures are needful for its survival.

One of these governments must address the size of the civil service. VIP refused to do. To date NDP has not done so but choosing rather to increase other fees, but is now the next government will have no choice
          But to address it.

People need to regularise themselves and take proper measures to adopt to the changes in the economy by eliminating all the excessive spending because neither NDP nor VIP can fix this situation. This is a world crisis; we need to pray and stop the fighting.

DO you think what you just said make sense. They are laying off, shedding dead weight to make the company profitable and viable so what is your point? lmao! Laying off people don't mean your business isn't successful. It just means you realize you don't need to be spending all that money on staff that are not really needed. LIME and Digicel are bigger but don't have as much staff as CCT. Why don't you talk about those.

    Interesting reasoning they are giving.

To compete they would have to have staff that understands the business and of course money.

They were already a small company which makes this very confusing.

NDP or any government in power should be very concerned ...

Unemployment is on a serious rise ...

LIME too has reduce much over several months and is no longer "the it" place to work

Do we see why Digicel should of never been allowed in this small market?

Where is this local company going to find more experienced people? is this a sign of 100% local requesting 100% work permits???

Now you all acting shocked and surprised? there's much worst to come when a people continue to act all nationalistic when it comes to telling everybody else where they from but act canibalistic when it comes to supporting each other...united we stand...............................do the rest..

Yes, some BVI people are getting more and more against their own; as many blacks no matter where they are from like to be against other blacks without good cause. But, please don't throw around "cannibalism" lightly, remember a few instances have actually happened in other places in recent times. In truth, let us learn to live at peace with each other.

Sorry for the employees I hope they were saving something in the bank and not eating and dressing with all they work for. This economy will have more to go, as business look at the ones who will help them make money, not all the people you do see in work place do work. I am wondering if the next set of people to lay off employees are those from Citco? Its just my thoughts. Now open your own business like selling phones, see if you all could give them a competition. Its hard, but every change in life requires new plans.

Everybody should worry. I like your reasoning, it raise a consciouness about Labour and Society. WHen an employee are asked to work overtime, that employee should make sure a conversation is pursued and documented, (you can do it yourself, write a journal entry) just so months later you have problem with payment. Many employer take advantage of their staff, by telling them that supervisors do not get overtime. This is a lie from hell. Educate yourself about Labour in a commonwealth country and see what you find. Some of those employees can fight that termination, because they were notify after the fact. Manay employees do what CCT did because they do not want a confrontation. I find sitting down with the employees and speak with them confidently gain a lot of their respect. They will say things, but the sudden way the deal with the employees would make a lot of people go to the Digicel. But employees must know their rights, because they are offering labour for a fee.

They laid off and gave early retirement to hundreds over the past few years and rehired them on contract basis for certain works. Why should CCT continue paying people for just showing up and being on the internet/facebook all damn day. This is common sense and has nothing to do with politics. If a company isn't making money how the hell can it keep people on payroll who are not absolutely required. LOL.. the chickens coming home to roost in BVI and it's going to be a long ass summer. Ignorance is costly. Now let's blame NDP for this and re-elect VIP so they can finish off the country. BAM BAM BAM forward ever..let's put them back ya'll, I'm leading the pack..lololollool

NOTHING is wrong with the economy but something is wrong with the people. Every project or development put forward you all say NO! Why? You all get comfortable sitting in AC behind a desk on FB and other bull@#$%t all day while getting a salary. Only now that life gets real will people start realizing we need to support the Government push to get new business in here and provide employment. That's the problem. It's not the economy, it's the backward people who think their job would last forever so leave things as is. WRONG!!!!

Many good people lost jobs at CCT not because of competition, but poor management and greed. For years when the profits were good they were not invested to build and grow the company. The network deteriorated over the years and the owners expect the people to pay for shoddy unreliable services. Now good workers BVI and expats who have tried to hold the company together are paying the price. Sad.

What would government do about this? What would the Minister of Labour do about this? I have the answer - NOTHING. They were part of the conspiracy and they knew about it all along. The NDP is the BVI Investment Club and the BVI Investment Club is the NDP. You can't turn a man against himself. All I say is NDP making sure they don't get another term in office - they working very hard at losing the next election. Fullstop.

the people don't want development which creates jobs and will now blame government for everything. Fraser is saying the premier is wrong but the premier is right. If they let the government do their job and develop the place then these workers would easily be able to find alternate employment at another private institution. instead you have every other company barely threading water and can't hire anyone else right now. The economy is not bad, the problem is the BVI has been stagnated. We have people lined up with money and ideas adn continue to turn them down for bullshit reasons.

I don't think it needed a massive lay off by CCT to realize there are many things wrong with in Tortola.

Just look over your shoulder at the state of the country regarding Crime, Corruption, Poverty, Judiciary, Policing, Economics.

    Tortola is in ah MESS.

This has nothing to do with Dr. Smith. People seem to think that he is running investment club. He is a shareholder like everyone else. However…. People like Me**e., and Dr. Van......hmmm never will I pratronize their business again. Our own locals are sinking us. Mrs. Penn hmmmm… all I will say is karma is a ______.

Most of us enter adult life with great ambitions for how we will start our own ventures, but the harshness of life wears us down. We SETTLE into some job and slowly give in to the illusion that our bosses CARE ABOUT US AND OUR FUTURE, THAT THEY SPEND TIME THINKING OF OUR WELFARE. We forget the ESSENTIAL TRUTH that all humans are governed by SELF-INTEREST. OUR BOSSES KEEP US AROUND OUT OF NEED, NOT AFFECTION. THEY WILL GET RID OF US THE MOMENT THAT NEED IS LESS ACUTE OR THEY FIND SOMEONE YOUNGER AND LESS EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE US. 50TH LAW

Unfortunately what has been going on for sometime is that locals are being replaced by what you would call "contractors" for 3 to 6 months. This government has been making it a stead fast policy and now it is getting so out of hand. Labor supposed to be doing their job but as usual its just a lot of wasted space and breath. Its supposed to be locals working, but because of this government what is happening locals are getting left behind and big companies are bringing in their own "outside workers" and I'm not talking people from the Caribbean to do the same work that locals can do. Prime example rumor has it that a local hotel doing major renovations is bringing in outside workers to do jobs that local companies have been doing for years but all of a sudden I guest these local companies can't seem to be doing the job right. This is the type of atmosphere that the Government has created. They are giving the people a false sense of things turning around when you can actually see daily that this is not the case. This is a big hit for locals and just the letter shows that they had no interest int he employees of CCT.

People get laid off everyday when a business is not doing well. It's happened to me and my husband twice. If you stay positive, update your resume, contact friends and family to see if they know of any openings, get letters of referral and start looking for work before your last day at your present job, things will work out. Who knows, God might even have something better for you. Most importantly; pray, stay positive and don't hold on to hate, blame and negative feelings. All God's blessings to those who are loosing their jobs and those who are searching. You are in our prayers.

The BVI Investment club was a rip off from day one, I am very sorry for all those who lost their source of livelihood at this hard cash strapped time, but CCT was a rip off from day one (anyone remember 75¢ per minute for calls), imagine charging 10 times the cost or more for their services when lime was charging them the regular 10¢ a minute. The Investment Club members became millionaires because of us their consumers who needed or wanted what they considered at the time “a luxury service”. For a comparison if one were to look at the other carriers at that time, they were not charging half the prices as CCT. What CCT and the Investment Club have failed to admit is that when Lime and Digicel entered the market forcefully they did in fact lost a lot of their customers, they were living in a state of denial.

People our local companies are hurt by our government who have Authoritative mechanisms in place to provide protection and oversight of companies but it is just a smoke screen. Government needs to follow all their own rules.

The present government and Premier are doing a fantastic job at managing the affairs and resources of the country. The economy is poised for take-off and yes Robust, crime is under control, people are getting jobs and minor hiccups like lay off, consumer confidence and raising inflation are all just temporary glitches and the hard working NDP administration is working overtime to put these behind us. The NDP is doing the best and no more can be asked of them; because they are already giving it their best.
