CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- Some six Tortola horses competed at the 2017 Carnival Races at Clinton E. Phipps Racetrack in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI) on April 27, 2017; however, only one of the visiting horses tasted victory.

Tortola horse Giant Valley of Top Priority Racing Stables dug deep but was unable to overhaul Totally Evil in the Governor’s Cup race that attracted a top purse of $20, 000.

Horse owner Lesmore Smith still had lots to cheer about as earlier his horse American Greed took victory in Race 5 for The Enrique ‘Ricky’ Ashby Trophy. The open race over 6 furlongs attracted a purse of $8,500 with fees added.

American Greed with jockey Winston Hurst Jr romped home in a time of 111.3.

It was a race dominated by Tortola horses as Daboluck took second. Flashin Cat was third, Center Gold in fourth and Pumped Up Kicks fifth.

Other results

Race One was taken by El Convidado, Race Two by Sparky Bee, Race Three by Irish Smarty, Race Four by DQ Rexster, Race Six by Extra Dinner, and Race Eight by I’M Sensational.

Meanwhile, the A Class Governor’s Cup race, with a distance of 1 mile 70 yards, was won in a time of 142.2 by Totally Evil of Alliance Point Stables.

Totally Evil, with jockey Boca Chica, led from gate to wire, overcoming a late kick by Giant Valley.

Second was Giant Valley, third Conspiracy, fourth Brass Note, fifth Park Ranger (Tortola) and Sixth Burndines.

UPDATE: Totally Evil denies Giant Valley a 2nd Governor’s Cup win

Defending Governor’s Cup champion Giant Valley, known to rise to the big occasion, dug deep on the home stretch but found Totally Evil of St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI) a bridge too far in the feature encounter of the Carnival Races at the Clinton E. Phipps Race Track in St Thomas today, April 27, 2017.

The race, however, belonged to Totally Evil who shot out of the gate and never looked back, overcoming an early challenge by Conspiracy and Brass Note and then a late surge by Giant Valley.

The St Thomas horse was coming off a win on April 2, 2017 at Ellis Thomas Downs on the main island of Tortola. His win today laid to rest doubts by many horse racing pundits that owner Michael ‘Lulu’ Smith had made a mistake in coming to Tortola rather than resting his horse for the Carnival Races.

Totally Evil took a convincing win, beating into second place Giant Valley. Conspiracy was third.

More details to follow.
