DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI – Not being present to witness performances by some 15 persons who intended to make it through to the finals of this year’s Emancipations Festivals competition was unfortunate, as it was a night that those present did enjoy as they got a sip of bigger things to come on Wednesday July 30, 2014 at the Festival Ground.

Fifteen (15) took to the stage at Fantasy, Duff’s Bottom last night June 27, 2014 giving their fans a slim taste of what they had to offer for the calypso competition for the Jubilee Celebrations. In the true spirit of calypso they came with lyrics of celebration in sync with the theme for the 60th Festival, those which speak of socials ills of domestic violence and lifestyles of today compared to years gone by. They also sang about the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) and the Cruise Pier Development Project.

There were those that were lyrical and fun-like as in the case of Marco with “Deh searching meh-ass-an-all”. With Public Relations Officer for the VI Festivals and Fairs Committee Ms Lynette L. Harrigan and Committee Member Stewart Donovan chairing the nights eliminations round, a three-man panel of judges complete with a tabulator and a comfortable audience, the nine who will be challenging Sister Joyce for her crown was announced.

Making it to the final of the 60th Jubilee Festival are King Henry, Shereen, Oginga, King Paido, King Macko, Falco, Princess Didi, Luther B and Mighty Ley Ley.

- also Soca Monarch eliminations for Tomorrow night

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Veteran Virgin Islands Calypsonian Shereen Flax-Charles is among the list of 16 persons who will be contesting the Calypso Competition of Festival as Tortola celebrates 60 years of emancipation festivities.

Flax-Charles made her return on stage in the Calypso Competition in the Virgin Gorda Easter Festival of 2014, but despite she did not make the top three, hopes are high for her at the Tortola Festival.

The VI Festivals & Fairs Committee’s Public Relations Officer Ms Lynette Harrigan has confirmed that the elimination round will take place tonight June 27, 2014 at Fantasy Bar and Restaurant, Duff’s Bottom where each Calypsonian will perform one of their songs where they will be judged so as to move on to the finals.

Falling on the heels of the Calypso elimination round is the LIME Soca Monarch Competition which was officially launched on June 1, 2014 on the Long Bay Beach, Beef Island.

The line-up as was released by the promoters contesting the Power segment will be Makisha, Elvis White Band, Miriam, Tino, Kingman, Shilloh, Joe Rankin, Epic, Beach, Daddy Pitt, Casey, Ringo, and Spice.

They robbed Macko last time in VG. I want to hear what lyrics he's coming with now.

Macko sang crap at the VG Festival; however, I was at the elimination last night and the song he performed was real nice (the lyrics and the music)

I liked what I saw on tv I wasn't in VG village. Enjoyed the other night as well. I liked all but one of the acts so it should be good this year.

This is one of the most beautiful women in the BVI. Inside and out. Get to know her and stop the stupid bashing. She has helped me and so many other people in the community. She is one who is keeping the art firm of calypso alive. Back off. Yes her mom is from Antigua. And she is very proud of her Antiguan heritage. Her fire and passion!

I predict these are the names of the Calypsonians that would make it: Luther B, Paido, Oginga, Shereen, King Henry, Mighty Cloud, Leh- Leh, Princess DD, and Falco. The results should be announced the same night. This leaves room to ask what really happen behind close doors. I just hope that the results for the Soca Monarch would be announced after the show. Lets get with the time and the rest of the world people.
