Newcomers take Fishing Jamboree top prizes

- Winner donates top prize cash to VG youth fishing group

VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – ‘Living the Dream Fishing Team’ of St. Croix USVI, the winner of the top prizes in the Virgin Gorda Fishing Jamboree held over the Easter weekend, sent a clear message to their competitors for next year’s Easter Fishing Jamboree, according to the owner of the winning team’s boat Mr Dave Johnson, who said, “I told them sharpen your hooks we are coming back next year.”

Mr Johnson said while it is their second competition in the Virgin Islands, participating in the Virgin Gorda Fishing Jamboree was a first for them. “We came to Anegada last year to do their fishing tournament, had a great time and we are trying to do every fishing tournament we can in the local area, the Virgin Islands… British and US,” he added.

Mr Johnson said that while they are lovers of fishing they want to ensure that they play a key role in promoting the fishing culture across the region as it is one of the greatest and most skilled sports on water.

‘Living the Dream Fishing Team’ snatch among several other top prizes, the overall winning prize of $5000 and while other cash prizes will go towards the paying for fuel and other attached expenses the top prize money has been donated to the Virgin Gorda Youth Fishing group. “We are donating our top prize of $5000 to the Virgin Gorda Youth Fishing Cooperative summer programme. We got to get the next generation interested in fishing so anything we can do to help with that we are in,” said Mr Johnson.

Mr Verne Wheatley, Public Relations Officer for the tournament was high in praise for the team’s gesture in donating their biggest cash prize to the promotion of fishing among the youths of Virgin Gorda.

He told this news site that while they have recorded a successful competition, 2014 has not been one of their best as they faced a few challenges, the main being that of the weather. “We did very well considering the challenges we had with the weather, we had extremely high winds up to the 30s which is kind of usual but it happens and was consistent over the two days,” said Wheatley.

Sunday April 20, 2014 was said to have been the better of the two days of catching yet the catches were in very small numbers said Mr Wheatley who noted, “That’s part of fishing. Every day is fishing day, every day is not catching day.”
