ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI: Residents of the Virgin Islands (VI) are being cautioned by the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), of possible showers and isolated thunderstorms affecting portions of the islands during the overnight and early morning hours.

“Unstable weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend as abundant moisture will interact with an upper- level trough just to the north of the region,” the National Weather Service through the Department of Disaster Management notes.

The information was released via a statement on October 12, 2018.

School cancellation

Already, inclement weather was cited as a reason for the cancellation of Friday’s class at the Elmore Stoutt High School for both the Junior and senior school. However, the weather service states that more periods of shower and isolated thunderstorms may affect portions of the islands during the overnight and early morning hours.

“Given that the soils remain saturated, urban and small stream flooding, as well as rockfall, will remain possible in areas of steep terrain… a tropical wave is still forecast to move across the region Sunday through Monday” the DDM warns.

Precaution at sea

“Seas will continue to range mainly 4 to 6 feet across the Atlantic waters and local passages,” the release says noting that Small craft operators are urged to exercise caution across these waters.

Elsewhere, seas are expected to range between 1 to 5 feet. Winds will continue from the east to southeast between 10 and 15 knots.

The Department of Disaster Management, however, warns, that it is not an official meteorological office and that information disseminated by the Department is gathered from a number of professional sources used or contracted by the DDM to provide such information.
