‘Unemployment rate in VG shocking!’ – Albert Wheatley

Mr Albert Wheatley’s idea for the Job Fair was brought to life consequent of his constant browsing of the news and other webs sites and the local newspaper where he saw frequent and lots of advertising of positions for job opportunities on Virgin Gorda. “One of the advantages of the Job fair was that you were not only able to receive an application but you got the opportunity to meet the applicant and they were very happy with that,” he said. VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI – When Coordinator of Youth Employment Services (YES) Mr. Albert Wheatley came up with the idea of a Job Fair for youths of Virgin Gorda, neither he or the property owners had any idea that the rate of unemployment on the island was that extensive.

“One of the things I find interesting is a number of the employers said that they were not aware that there were as many young unemployed people on Virgin Gorda and I had no idea myself,” said Mr. Wheatley.

The job fair was held on Thursday September 25, 2014 at the Catholic Community Centre on Virgin Gorda and the turnout of business properties and other were remarkable according to Mr Wheatley but what was more striking was the hundreds of youths between the ages of 16 – 30 years old who came out.

“I had no idea or was not sure what the turnout among the young people would have been but I must say that I am extremely happy and excited. We had in excess of 60 young people from Virgin Gorda that came out in addition we had about 50 [fifth form] students from the Bregado Flax and [students] from the Primary Division that came out and visited as well,” said Mr Wheatley.

This news agency arrived at the venue shortly after 2:00pm by which time all the exhibitors had already left despite the fact that the event was scheduled to come to a close at 4:00pm. However Mr Wheatley and his team were still on spot. He told us that in dialogue with many of the property owners it was confirmed that several persons were chosen for employment opportunities.

“I spoke with a number of them (property owners) after and one of the questions that I asked was did you see anyone that you would hire and they said absolutely, they met some very good people, a lot of the properties actually went out with application forms some of them came with fifty but they were all used,” he said.

He said that he was confident that a number of the participating youths would be getting calls from some of the properties in a matter of days and for some in weeks to come. “I am looking at dedicating one day a week to be on Virgin Gorda to continue this process with the young people here.”

He said the YES programme will continue to prepare and match persons with job opportunities.

Mr Wheatley’s idea for the Job Fair was brought to life consequent of his constant browsing of the news and other webs sites and the local newspaper where he saw frequent and lots of advertising of positions for job opportunities on Virgin Gorda. “One of the advantages of the Job fair was that you were not only able to receive an application but you got the opportunity to meet the applicant and they were very happy with that,” he said.

Mr Wheatley said that the key now is to continue with rigid follow up in the best interest of the youths of Virgin Gorda.

Mr. Albert Wheatley said that unemployment is shocking in the 9th District huh?

Talk in the grapevine is that his name is floating around to be the 9th district Rep. on VIP when he is an NDP.

Well it amazes me that this government still believe that our economy is growing under them when all they did was just approve millions of dollars to be circulated into their pockets for the cruise ship pier project.

They have accomplish NOTHING else for the people of this country. Just pure rhetoric sweet talk but the people will not be fooled and I will continue to collect my coins and not steal them.

Albert is not a vip and can not be change at the last minute. I hope VIP congress do not allow this to happen because you will see trouble in the place. Where is Keith Flax on this? What happen to the other good potential candidates like, Casandra O'Neal, Devon Osborne, Stephanie Faulkner, Franky Vanterpool, just to name a few? Don't let the NDP crooks back in.

Albert is a SNAKE IN THE GRASS!

great idea. Amazing with all the resorts and villas more jobs aren't available. just a comment: if the fair is slated until 4:00, why are exhibitors allowed to leave at 2:00? that is not a good example to set for youth seeking employment. what? they can leave when they want to? you contract for 4:00, you stay.

My personal opinion the un-employment rate in Virgin Gorda is not that high, most of the persons that attended are already working, and maybe want to get another job that maybe will pay a little bit more. There were the 5th formers about over 15 students, the Grade 6 students over 15 students, and a few other locals in between. The reality is that Mr. Wheatley is somewhat a bit exaggarating, but I am glad the young people got a chance to attend a Job Fair.

Didn't know because they are all a bunch of sleepers. Working for government getting your check every month you set, you don't care about who is not getting paid. Besides that there is a system which has been allowed to go on in Virgin Gorda for years which does nothing for the development of the island or its people. How can you hire youths when the people who have so called full time jobs barely work for six month? Piiisssssh.

This was a complete waste of time , and straight up humiliating. Youths got dressed up and went out with so much enthusiasm to only meet 6 businesses Max, 3 out of which straight up told you that they don't have anything available right now, and took resumes to only put under a phone book in their offices. The other 3 only had about 5-6 jobs available at most. Which included laundry maids, housekeepers and servers.. is this what I paid $135 every semester, hundreds of dollars on text books, long hours studying to get a high gpa and graduate with a degree in Business Administration to do? The businesses didn't seem very eager to be there either.. so much youths unemployed and only those that have hookups in Government and other businesses getting jobs, despite how unqualified they are.. what are we to do? BEG? Try to do everything by the books and you still end up suffering.

By mid day businesses had already left. Up to this moment I don't understand what Coldwell Bankers were doing there, seeing that they had absolutely no position available, nor will they have any in the near future. I guess like all the other businesses they were there to hand out brochures to look at the beautiful properties you'll never be employed at. Necker Island and Mosquito island are Basically Mini UK with all the brits that are coming in every month to work.. Oil Nut bay and all their fake smiles were annoying, and Government HR seemed to be having their own meeting when you came to their stall, in which they seemed bothered that it was interrupted to perform job fair duties.

The Youths of the British Virgin Islands better wake up,and don't allowed no-one to cover their face with wool or a spider web. The un-employment rate in VG is not that right;maybe a 2%and it is only those who don't want to work.

So much for highest GDP. No we don’t have the highest GDP. This misconception has lured many to the BVI seeking riches and when they arrive and find we are just trying to make do, it has caused great angst and friction between the locals and foreigners. They are looking for things that simply do not exist in the BVI and become slighting. BVI is looking for those who can help them get to the next level and it seems because both are looking for the same thing, neither can help each other. Now that that misconception has been cleared up everyone can re-adjust their expectations.

Next season we should have some open spots. Book keeper/ first mate/captain. The captain should be an experience captain. Might have other open spots but won't know for sure but do know we will find jobs for about 2/3 of them. We are a glass bottom boat and all staff should know how to swim & be willing to go snorkeling with guest on request. Also have a valid S.S. Card.

Some people will hate this statement but truth is truth. A job is a job. $50 is better than NO dollars. What happen to creep before you walk? Youth with no experience want to start of at the top and make BIG money..lol ..nonsense!! The sad part of the matter is that some youths looking a job doing so because they would like to remain in the BVI. If there are no jobs then there is not reason for you to remain. Those from the BVI will quickly understand that education is vital to success. How many dropped out of school and now what to work without even so much as a High School Certificate? People need to look at the real issues and problems before making noise about what Myron or Kedrick did or did not do.

Is there a government agency that keeps records of unemployment in the territory. I am not astute as many a folks but I would think that the information relating to unemployment, underemployment will be sourced before the job fair. What say you? Was this job fair put on as a game in these little places for politics sake or to help those who can't find a job or what? I will challenge everyone who read this to contact their ministers in this matter for this should be something each minister know first hand about the employment of people in their district. If they don't know then who are they representing. There are also district officers also. Might they also be contacted for a breakdown. am shocked that this information was not sought before the fair. How many people working hard and for months cannot get a red cent from the place of work?mwhat are they to do when those who supposed to represent them wont even acknowledge the situation? I am a bit winded no flab basted that those who chose the spotlight still want to stay somewhat in the dark.

Unfortunate as it is, most young people want a job, where they earn top dollar, immediately. Doesn't happen that way, even with the best education. Most have to start near the bottom of the "totem pole" and work themselves up by proving they know what they "say" they know, are dependable, trust worthy, willing to learn more, etc... Seems I read more are acquiring business degrees as opposed to learning a trade. Most trade jobs do not require a college education, but the willingness to learn a trade through a Vocational School curriclium. Just some thought for the younger generation to start thinking about.
