ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Using his talk show –Umoja- on ZBVI 780 AM, host Cromwell Smith aka Edju Enka teamed up with two local Italian businesses and the BVI Red Cross Society to raise funds for victims of the August 24, 2016 earthquake that reduced three towns in Italy to rubble, claimed close to 300 lives, injured several hundreds and left thousands homeless.

The initiative saw several callers pledging funds towards the cause, including a very young girl pledging $100, bringing the figure up to a little over $1,500.

But that’s not all, persons are asked to support the continued fund raising by patronising the two Italian businesses located on Waterfront Drive in Road Town- Cappricio Di Mare and La Dolce Vita- who have pledged to donate $4 and $1, respectively on selected sales towards the move.

The organisers of the initiative are hoping to receive as much donation as possible by the end of September to aid in the relief.

Those willing to donate can do so at the BVI Headquarters in John's Hole or at its Virgin Gorda branch.

Public Relations Officer of the BVI Red Cross Ms Sarai O. Smith said the society was approached by the Italian community in the Virgin Islands and it was ready to assist in the earthquake relief efforts.

“We strongly support this initiative,” Smith said. According to her, once the funds are collected, the society will transfer it to the British Red Cross which will in turn hand it over to the Italian Red Cross.

And contrary to popular belief, one hundred percent of the proceeds will go to the people of the earthquake struck country, Smith assured.

Meanwhile, another earthquake killed at least 15 people in northern Italy, damaging buildings and injuring many on Thursday September 15, 2016.

The community must also be aware that the Adventist church all over the world solicit funds from the communities in each country to help in many situations. We start to collect funds from January to March. The funds provided allow the church to distribute help in situations like the -earthquakes victims. We know that situations like this happens, because we are in a world that is crumbling due to Sin. Unfortunately none of us are immune to these devastation that are happening. There is nothing wrong in collecting the funds now for theses victims. But each time the church may ask some people in the community, they feel that the church has money. And should assist in these areas by themselves. Right now I'm sure that help is rendered by the Adventist to help "NOW" in Italy. We all are one human race.
