Tynelle Gumbs: NCAA Div 2 Champion & All American
Gumbs was crowned the NCAA Division II National Champion and earned All-American status in the women's weight throw. She finished in 1st place with a throw of 21.41m (70'3"). Gumbs is only the second indoor national champion in the history of the Findlay women's track team. The previous national champion was Raven Clay in 2012 in the 60m hurdles. Gumbs has had a stellar season with the Oilers, as she recently won the GLIAC Championship in the weight throw and set the school record in the event as well this year.
“I was getting nervous as the competition was getting intense, on the 5th throw I took a deep breath, did my turns and got in a good throw. I still had to wait and see though as there were two girls who could have passed me. However, they didn’t throw further and I was lost for words really, just really happy,” commented Gumbs.
Herbert Jr also in action
Khari Herbert Jr, a senior at St Augustine’s University in North Carolina, will be the third athlete from the Territory, after Tynelle and sister Trevia to compete at the Championships.
He is ranked seventh in the 400 metres in Division II, having broken his own national indoor record and won his Conference championship.
He also is the fastest runner on a St Augustine's 4x400 relay team that is the top-ranked entry going into the Championships.
