ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two persons have reportedly been injured following a fire on April 21, 2013 in Main Street.

The injured persons have reportedly been rushed to Peebles Hospital for treatment.

Residents are praising the quick action of the Virgin Islands Fire and Rescue Department for reportedly averting a major fire disaster.

The fire reportedly started sometime around 9:30A.M. at an apartment building adjacent to the Midtown Restaurant and displaced a number of residents from the building. Persons reported of hearing an explosion and speculated it may have been a gas cylinder. This was subsequently confirmed by the VIF&R, who said the fire was caused when a gas cylinder exploded.

A man (now identified as David Joseph) who was attending to the cylinder at the time is one of the persons injured. Joseph reportedly suffered burns about his body.

“The guy was doing something on the gas bottle…” said a resident, “I don’t know if it had a leak or whatever and then we heard the big [gas escaping] and then the explosion.”

The resident stated that there was likely to be a significant amount of water damage to the apartments as opposed to any fire damage.

According to some occupants of the apartment, two 500 gallon gas cylinders which exploded were reportedly the storage tanks for the Midtown Restaurant and were stored near to the apartment.

A woman was reportedly injured after she was forced to jump from the rail of the apartment.

“There were huge flames, tall flames up to the next apartment above,” noted a resident. "The fire didn’t get to burn anything, but was burning out the gas that was in the cylinder.”

Fire officers could be seen atop the apartment building nearby aiming their hoses in the direction of the cylinders.

all the more reason for safety inspections to make sure canisters are stored correctly and there is a check on corrosion. This could have been worse.

It is good that no one was hurt. But Pat does have a point. Safety is important in a number of things. And yes, it could have been worse. What if the building itself blew up killing people. Therefore, I have no problem with this statement.
