T&T comedian Rachel Price bemoans state of VI port of entry

Some may have taken it as a stand-up comedian stunt; others may have seen it as the reality told with humor but whatever way it was taken Ms Rachel Price described with much disgust the poor state of the one of the Virgin Islands’ water ports of entry and the shoddy appearance of some customs officers. ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Some may have taken it as a stand up comedian stunt; others may have seen it as the reality told with humor, but whatever way it was taken Ms Rachel Price described with much disgust the poor state of the one of the Virgin Islands’ water ports of entry and the shoddy appearance of some customs officers.

Ms Price was the co-host for the Miss BVI 2014 Pageant held at the Multi Purpose Complex on August 3, 2014 along with the main host Mr Treffor Grant. Once on stage Ms Price went straight to vent her feeling about the poor state of affairs she was forced to put up with as she entered the Territory from St. Thomas, USVI.

For the greater part her distaste was for the absence of a shaded area for passengers on arrival, the poor organizing/prioritizing of welcoming in passengers as opposed to the way out going passengers were treated. Her main concern was about being made to stand in the hot sun in line to clear immigration while immigration officer seem to have being giving priority to loading the vessel that brought her in with outgoing passengers.

“There are certain things and factors that come with Rachel Price, sleep, sleep with a good man, maybe two, the more the merrier depending on my mood, I still trying to kick nicotine, and what else - a good book and food. At 6 O’clock in the morning I have had neither of the five and you are telling me to stand in the hot sun to fill the boat that I now come off of and the boat that was there before under the shed, Tortola, Tortola,” she said.

And if that was not bad enough she said that the other thing is that the authorities need to have some good looking customs officers. “You could tell me anything once the man cute. You (Tortola) should get some good looking customs officers... he would have had me standing in that sun for hours but you don’t send a woman that is as wide as she is tall to tell me stand in the sun with a bad weave,” she added.

Ms Price said that she stood under the shed and made it abundantly clear that she was not going to be standing in the sun. “Then somebody came and said come this way Ms Price, I like special treatment I am Rachel Price and I am fabulous even if you don’t think so that’s your business, it’s not what you are called it’s what you answer to,” continued Ms Price.

Adding fury to fire she told the story of two others who were after her passing ahead of her. “So is said excuse me mom but I was in front of you and I don’t know their names but one is biggy and one is bigger and one of them in deep need of a razor. This nonsense about being natural got to stop where your hair on your legs look like it could get corn-rows, there is nothing natural about under arm hair and facial hair and hair on your foot if you name woman,” said Ms Price.

The state of the VI’s Port of entry has always been a matter of concern to persons especially entering the Territory.

This was funny and it made me laugh because this is so true. We BVIslander believe we can treat people how we want when they entering this territory. It is a shame how some of these custom officers behave especially the women their facial expression lets you know "wha you here fa? it stinks. We should be greeting people with a smile but no we have to greet them with a sour face and bad attitude.

Really so when you go St. John and standing out in the hot sun like cattle waiting to be branded what do you call that? When you go Charlotte Amalie and it is supposed to open at 8:00 am and the officers wait till the boat reach and still do not open up the entrance what is that? How about the sign in Charlotte Amalie that we now have to stand behind because the ladies told Tolians they sick of hearing them what is that? She talking like our service is the worst and it is not. And furthermore she was talking about her having to wait which is standard AT EVERY PORT INCLUDING THE US and PUERTO RICO. If her spoil belly behind go Puerto Rico she thinks they will seperate her and carry her to some special customs area? Please I have seen celebrities and football stars in San Juan standing in the same lines so please. Also she was passing judgement on our officers not being cute, that is some superficial BS and she was out of place....

The part about braiding the hairs on the legs HA! Plus the bad weave and needing to invest in a razor for facial and body hair was kind of priceless.

I agree. There was nothing funny about those comments Rachel made. She needs to look in the mirror. where she came from is no better. I have trevelled to every single caribbean island, and the waiting area of some are better than others, but they could all do with some type of improvement. If she came via USVI, it is likely she will depart via the same means, so while she is calling down the BVI she will get a chance to experience the entry side of the USVI. I hope it rains when she gets to the USVI port, so that she could experience the real thing.

I wish I knew who you were, I would have bought your lunch for the rest of the year. I agree with you 300%. I am not excusing our services cause we can do better, but when I in St. John standing in that blazing hot sun, I don't hear a murmer, from locals or visitors. Only Tortola everybody have an opinion. AS you say when you get off the plane in Puerto Rico and have to drag your bags nearly to Miami to get to immigration, nobody says nothing. STUPPPPSSSS.....Next!!!!! Rachel Get thee hence...........

I understand what you are saying but at the end of the day, as I am a BVI Islander and this island is family to me what St. John, PR and the USVI do is not my concern so much as what we do. We should strive to be better than all other nations around us and stand out. We depend on tourism. What stars say about our island does negatively and positively affects us. We know she has made valid points because as we see and interact with these same custom officers, some of their attitudes are despicable. People should not have to wait in the blazing sun, should not be treated unfairly, as tho they are criminals. When I come in i make it a point to put a smile on these officers faces because I don't want to be affected by negativity.

Nonsense! Immigration officers are not responsible for the loading of passengers on ferries...that's more likely port security doing their work...I do agree that our ports of entry needs to be upgraded. VG Airport ..hot like hell..V G Seaport ..a disaster waiting to happen. As shabby as the port in St. Thomas down town looks, it's very functional I must say..

Very true. Why is there an eternal wait for bags to come off before passengers. Surely there is a more efficient scheme. Despite all the money spent on training Immigration and Customs Officers to be welcoming to visitors, there seems little change in attitudes.
As Ms Price shows, one bad experience is broadcast world wide via the Internet, and potential visitors to these isles will be put off. You must do better.

I have travelled to many places and been through many ports. The job of a custom officer is not to befriend anyone it is their job to remain professional remain vigilant and treat everyone coming into the territory equally and with respect. The officers of today have come a long way cause in the past they would have put you back on the boat with that snobbish attitude. I never even heard of you until today and it seems to me like you are a wanna be. Wanna be celebrity.

Which is something entirely different, and she was damn well out of place. If she had a problem with ports thats one thing but to pass judgement on the officers doing their job not being eye candy for her was rude, shallow and out of place.

This is the the thing about this BVI this was supposed to be our sixtieth anniversary. To this day we cannot find a local person to co host a queen show but u bring this person who has no respect for those who has given her the opportunity to make a name for her self. But she used this as an opportunity to belittle us as a people and a country struggling to get back to where we were and beyond. Until we change the way we think about our selves and our country men we will always be a joke for everyone cause we make them think that we need them. We are more than we think but we don't believe it that's why we're not able to move mountains . If we just believe that we are no less than anyone else but we are only as good as we believe. We continue to let people dictate our lives and our future this is a time in our lives that we should go with our gut feeling and make it happen we are all Tortolians how much more should we take how much more should we be willing to go through. The attacks by our politicians who we voted for the people they brought here to tell us that we are not good enough. The political slavery that we face every day of our lives. It is time we search our hearts and find the courage to do the Right thing and put our country first and do whatever is necessary to be a better people cause a better people makes better decisions better decisions make a stronger country and a more prosperous one. We can make our country a great one let's take that chance and do it together.

You are one of the reasons Customer Service in the BVI will never get better. Our Ports of Entry are in a deplorable state, and make it worst we treat people who come to our country to spend, and who can also be repeat visitors like they begging us... Having visitors or guest come to our Country is a blessing and such should be treated as if they are human beings.

I do hope that one day our level of Customer Service will get better... And training alone won't do it.

Ms. Price used an opportunity given her (whch she was pad for) to blatantly disrespect law enforcement officers of this country, who work under very difficult conditions everyday to maintain the borders of these islands. I dare say, she should be made to use the same media to publicly apologize to this country and more specifically the Immigration and Customs Officers.
Granted, we have some work to do at our ports of entry, but no one should be allowed to dsrespect us like this, leave and rtrn on another occasion as normal. It is apparent that she wanted some special treatment and I don't see the need for it.
I also agree that we can find a local person to co-host this pageant and leave this rude, disrespectful person where she is, Trinidad or whereever.

Now that is funny. I think this should be her last visit to the BVI as an invited guest with all expenses paid for. I wonder what her experience is like when she enters PR and the US from Trinidad because those are the most serious immigration and custom officers I have ever seen. Some may say good afternoon and good morning but they do not even look you in the face unless they are taking your picture or finger printing you. A friend of my heard her for the first time at the queen show and asked if we could not find anyone else to host the show.

Every where has the Good, The Bad and The Indifferent but God made us ALL. Ms. Price, am sure there are other countries you may want to try. Feel free to do so. You didn't tell us any thing new. This is so sad that we paid for such disrespect. Because the truth is that these people have broken down their own country with their rude behavior and lack of respect and love for each other and themselves and it is reflected in their crime rate, low standard of living for most of them and materialistic outlook about life. Why are we looking to such people to host our own shows. My anger is at the persons who paid for her to come here.

Ms Price, at least we have a Port of entry. T&T Port of entry is more a Port of Depatrure. Every body leaving to come to the hot sun at Tortola's port of entry. You and your melanin infused skin had only the sun to be concerned about. You did not have to worry about being robbed, kidnapped and or killed. T&T is a failure politically, socially and economically and you are a prime example of the reasons why. Lack of humanity, social sensibility and gratitude. Your audience packed with your grinning compatriots who practically move Heaven and Earth to come through our Port of Entry and who wouldn't want to be in your shoes, having to return to T&T. You should visit our prison and connect with more of them enjoying the good life in the BVI.
You tried but your sick humour could not mask your envy. Good riddance and enjoy your purse of comforting US dollars while it lasts.

From this report I see this individual ruffled some feathers. I also see many also comparing and contrasting the BVI standards with that of places with lesser or equal standards. I have never travelled to the USVI but I have travelled to the BVI and Trinidad. The experience were at the different ends of the spectrum. There are many factors which could account for the differences. I think BVIslanders should not see the comments as an insult but as a motivation to strive to improve their standards. I have, thanks to LIAT experienced services at almost all the airports in the Caribbean and I must say Trinidad has the one of the best if not the best airport (Piarco) in the Caribbean.
So BVI, strive to give visitors a different 'wow' experience.

No matter where she comes from and what she looks like it does not negate the fact that we can do better at our ports of entry. Maybe if we strive to offer a good service there will be no reason for people to criticize us. It's hard to hear the truth sometimes.

Two gates, two ports of entry
One entry looks golden with adonislike smiling wait staff in airconditioned surroundings anticipation.
The other entry is basic and no nonsense with everydaylike and ordinary concrete, sun and people.
    What lies beyond those gates?
Which gate is a lie and which gate is the truth?
Which gate leads to Hell and which gate leads to Paradise?
    Choose wisely.

It is the ultimate decision for each and everyone at the end of our journey.
What lies beyond those gates is what is important. Don't be a fool and be fooled with the foolish and the foolishness.

I am a Trinidadian living in the BVI for the past 18 years, and there is nothing or no one can get me to go back Trinidad to live. I go maybe every two years because I have family there, but when I enter the BVI I am given more consideration and respect than when I go home to Trinidad. We have rude and poorly trained employees in every country, so Rachel don't knock BVI for poor employees behaviour, because Trinidad has their fair share. It used to be a night mare going through Immigration and Customs at Piarco Airport. Over the years they probably woke up and realized that they need visitors to come to T&T. Rachel please call a spade a spade.
