ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - According to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Tropical Storm Harvey will affect other Caribbean countries, however, the Virgin Islands can breathe a sigh of relief as Tropical Storm Harvey will pass to the south of the territory during the next 24 hours.

DDM indicated that no tropical storm warning is required for the territory at the moment, adding that breezy conditions will be experienced over the island.

Tropical Storm Harvey, at 5:00 P.M. yesterday, was located near latitude 13.0 north, longitude 55.8 west. Harvey is moving towards the west near 18 mph, and this motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days. Harvey may see some strengthening in the next 48 hours.

Brief lingering moisture and showers from the tropical wave that affected the territory on August 16 into August 17 may still be experienced.

Meanwhile, tropical storm warnings have been issued for Martinique, Barbados, St Lucia and St Vincent.

Other disturbances being monitored

According to reports from DDM, disturbance number one: Invest 92L is currently located on the east-northeast of Barbados. By Saturday night, this disturbance is expected to reach the northern Leeward Islands possibly as a depression or a weak tropical storm.

Resident are urged to monitor this system because it has the potential to affect the Virgin Islands.

Disturbance number two is generating disorganized showers to the south of the Cape Verde Islands. Forecasters are continuing to monitor this system as it progresses but it is currently not a threat to the territory.

Water Storage Encouraged

DDM in collaboration with the Water and Sewage Department (WSD) is urging residents to store drinking water and water for sanitation.

In an interview with Viona A. Smith, Information and Education Manager at the Department of Disaster Management, she encouraged persons to boil or sterilispe water before it is ingested.

In addition, during the hurricane season persons should also conserve the water that they have stored in order to have enough water to last for the period of the time the water supply has been interrupted.

The department recommends that persons should store approximately 3 gallons of water per person per day for at least 3 days. In addition, water should be stored in clean covered buckets, bottles and other containers.

This is advised because of the unstable weather system that the territory is experiencing which may affect water supply.
