TRW to target motor scooter riders outside of school system
“We have been approached by YEP [Youth Empowerment Programme] to do some work with them, as well as we are rallying popular/respected riders to partner with us to identify a different approach, outside of the schools,” Public Relations Officer of TRW, Mr Dame N. Peters told Virgin Islands News Online.
There continues to be complaints from members of the public that young scooter riders continue to ignore Road Safety laws, often posing a danger to themselves and other members of the public.
Added to that, there continues to be frequent road accidents involving motor scooters.
TRW makes successful stop @ SDA School
Meanwhile, the latest stop by TRW was at the Seventh-day Adventist School on May 12, 2016, where the team, which included 2nd District Representative Hon Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull and 6th District Representative Hon Alvera Maduro-Caines, was well received by students and teachers.
This came on the heels of visits to the Virgin Islands School of Technical Studies and the Elmore Stoutt High School.
The presentation focused on General Road Safety guidelines and rules, the consequences of not abiding by those rules and the role of emergency personnel with regards to traffic laws and accidents. Presenters, who are also members of the group, included officers from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force and Fire and Rescue.
Also presenting were members of the House of Assembly – Honourable Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull and Honourable Alvera Maduro-Caines – who encouraged students to take caution while engaging in road activities.
The group also educated the students on different aspects of automotive sports, including drag racing. Two motorsports vehicles were available for display to students. Loud engine sounds were heard throughout the school’s courtyard as the students were given a demonstration of these vehicles’ highly modified but street legal engines. The upgraded safety devices on each vehicle were also highlighted during the demonstration.
President of TRW Dr Carl Dawson, according to a press release from TRW, expressed his level of satisfaction with the work that he and his team continue to do. He said “TRW has been received well by the public based on the work they are doing in the schools. I am very satisfied with the commitment and dedication this team has and I know that we will continue to make a positive impact on youth in the territory.”
He also mentioned the group’s intention to have a Jr Club in the Secondary Schools. “The group has indicated an interest in having Jr Clubs at most if not all Secondary Schools that will provide an avenue for youth who want to educate others about Road Safety and allow those with an interest in the automotive industry to have the support they need” Dawson stated.
TRW intends to visit all Secondary Schools in the Territory as part of its campaign to educate the youth of this Territory about Road Safety while bringing about awareness of the positive aspects of automotive sports to the general populace.
One June 21, 2016 TRW will be teaming up with Third District Representative and Opposition Leader, Hon Julian Fraser RA to make a presentation on Road Safety to students of the St George’s Secondary School.
