Tropical Wave affecting the Virgin Islands
According to the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), showers and thunderstorms associated with a strong and fast-moving tropical wave (Invest 97L) now entering the extreme eastern Caribbean Sea are disorganised, while satellite data and surface observations indicate no signs of a closed surface circulation.
It said that although some gradual development of this system is possible during the next couple of days, the chance for tropical cyclone formation should increase after the wave reaches the western Caribbean Sea in a couple of days.
“This tropical wave is expected to continue producing locally heavy rains and gusty winds to portions of the Virgin Islands today. These conditions should spread westward across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea tonight and reach Hispaniola on Monday,” the DDM stated.
Head of the Department of Disaster Management (DDM) Sharleen S. Dabreo told Virgin Islands News Online that the Virgin Islands can expect more showers for most of the day.
“We are still under flash flood advisory and there is a small craft warning in effect,” Dabreo added.
The flash flood advisory remains in effect until 4: 00 P.M. today Sunday, July 31, 2016. A flash flood advisory means the possibility for flooding is high.
Meanwhile, the Department of Disaster Management said it will continue to monitor the systems and advise the public accordingly on its website: www.bviddm.com and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/bvi.ddm/
