ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Two weather systems that are being closely monitored by the Virgin Islands (VI) Department of Disaster Management (DDM), have been upgraded as they approach the Caribbean with a likelihood of reaching the Territory.

DDM reported today, September 8, 2018, that the National Hurricane Centre (NHC), in its latest advisories has upgraded Disturbance #1 to Tropical Depression Nine and that Disturbance #2, is now Tropical Storm ‘Helene.’

Residents and visitors are being cautioned to expedite preparations, as current information is suggesting that Tropical Depression Nine, could be a hurricane when it approaches the Lesser Antilles and, “has the possibility of affecting the VI.”

The NHC states that this system has the potential to become a tropical storm later today and a hurricane early next week.

Meanwhile, though Florence is expected to regain hurricane strength it is not expected to pose a threat to the VI, since current information from the NHC still keeps Florence a safe distance from the Territory.
