Tropical Shoot Out is on!- 4 NCAA teams to participate
Chairman of the new company, a non-profit organization, Mr Glenn Harrigan, confirmed that the University teams would be arriving as planned from December 18, 2013 and would be playing in an officially sanctioned NCAA Tournament.
Another member of the new company, Keith “88” Malone, lauded the vision of Steve Parillon, who had come up with the idea, only to see it face possible cancellation due to a lack of funding. “This was the brainchild of Steve (Parillon) and we definitely won’t forget that.”
Malone also went on to explain what the general public can expect from such an exciting Tournament. “Local Boy, Norville Carey, who plays for Southern Mississippi, will be on show and we really expect him to show his stuff. The speed of play will be so different from what we are used to that it will be a great spectacle.”
Joining Southern Miss. will be University of Arkansas, Little Rock; Jackson State University, Alabama; and Coppin State University, Baltimore, Maryland.
“Little Rock are a power house in their conference, Southern Miss. are pushing to win their conference, which is ranked 7th across the USA,” stated Malone.
The tournament is fully sanctioned and forms part of the regular season for the College teams. It will prove a highly competitive weekend, according to Harrigan and fans will be expected to fill the Multi-Purpose Sports Complex over the weekend.
Parillon will not be involved in the frontline as usual, but the new company said he would not be left out and a role for his strengths would be found. “Steve will have an active role to play, if he wants,” commented Paul Hewlett. “He has good ideas and perhaps could become a Consultant going forward,” added Malone.
In fact, a lot of Parillon’s original plans will be kept in place, reviewed and enhanced as need be by the new company, which also made a plea for others to come forward and offer assistance to make the event a great success.
Sponsors are still being sought to make it a truly memorable event, but Harrigan is confidant that they can make the event an annual tournament and something for the Virgin Islands to be proud of.
Many more plans will unfold during the coming days and the organizers also promise some amazing half time entertainment.
