ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Tropical Avengers proved to be the best at following directions, conquering challenges and having a vast knowledge of tourist sites, places and history of Tortola. This resulted in them emerging as the winners of the 2019 Rotary Club of Tortola’s Fun Car Rally.

The team of four, which included a baby girl and three friends, scored 80 points and won a trophy and $1000.

BDO Avengers came in second with 73 points and received a trophy and $750 cash. The third place winners were Team Spontaneous who amassed 72 points and received $500 cash. Team Yolo was fourth with 70 points and were rewarded with $300 cash.

The other teams that participated were the Carib Gamers, Team TMF and Team BDO.

Other prizes won were for Best Costume and Decorated Vehicle – Carib Gamers; Best Team Spirit – TMF; Best Classic Vehicle – Yolo; and Longest Participating Team – Team BDO. Team Spontaneous won a prize for their “spontaneity” in entering the rally.

The theme this year was a MARVELous journey through time and was held at the Festival Grounds in Road Town where the rally started and ended.

Promoting road safety, VI history & tourism

A total of seven teams entered the rally this year and according to committee chairperson Mr Edson Boyae, the event is primarily to promote road safety, test the knowledge of participants on the history of Tortola, promote tourism sites and teamwork, challenge persons to do things they may have never done or haven’t done in a long time and, most of all, promote fellowship and fun.

Some of the challenges included cone test driving, zip lining, and challenging some of the steep roads in Tortola, mainly the ‘Elevator Hill’ in Sea Cows Bay.

The car of the day!

There was no doubt that when a certain bright yellow vehicle hit the road it would have been a spectacle of the day. According to the owner, Justin, who says he bought the car on EBay and uses it for “few activities every now and then”, it is a 1959 shaped Chevrolet Apache customized and put on to a 1973 Chevrolet blazer transmission.

Making the team for the fun car rally in the classic car were Justin and his buddy Scott, who said they encountered a number of challenges, the main being getting the “Old girl” up the Elevator Hill.

“But the best part of it for us was the fun and the delight that we brought to the faces of many persons along the route,” said Scott.

They both related that they were stopped several times at different locations as persons wanted to know about the car, take photos and some persons even “wanted a ride in her.”

Prizes for the activities were sponsored by RiteWay, One Mart, MBs Ice, Delta Petroleum (Caribbean) Limited, Flow, Popeye’s, Caribbean Sellers, VI Festival and Fairs Committee and Scrub Island Resort.
