Triple Crown will go on with or without Slevin
According to Mr. Benjamin, he has been interacting with Mr. James Bates in an almost daily basis to convince him to enter Slevin in the final leg of the Triple Crown but, whether he changes his mind or not, the races will go on.
“At the end of the day he is exercising his right to not compete and we have to respect that but the Triple Crown will go on,” Mr. Benjamin told Virgin Islands News Online.
According to him, the issue was more about the misinterpretation of the rules rather than a default of the Triple Crown committee.
Slevin, one of the fastest horses on the race track, was the favourite to win the first ever Triple Crown. He had won the first leg on Tortola. However, that plan was dented by the controversial entry of St. Thomas’ Bud White for the second leg on St. Croix on February 19, 2012 which saw Slevin of St. Croix running into second place behind Bud White, who took a comfortable victory.
According to Bates, his top horse will be taking some much needed rest and will not be participating in the third leg of the Triple Crown or in the USVI’s Carnival races.
“He’s a horse, not a machine. He was to rest before the Triple Crown,” Bates explained, when asked the reason behind his decision.
