ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – When Zebalon McLean takes over the mantle of Chief Fire Officer (CFO) on June 5, 2012, top on his list will be to push for “training and re-training” of fire officers.

Speaking to Virgin Islands News Online, McLean, who is spending his last few days as the Deputy Director in the Department of Disaster Management (DDM), stated that he received his letter of appointment yesterday May 29, 2012.

“It’s a good feeling, and I just have to re-orient and familiarise myself but I am confident that with my 16 years of training in the fire service it will become a reality,” the 44 year-old told this news agency.

During his tenure as a Fire Officer, McLean, a Virgin Islander, worked at the seven fire stations throughout the Virgin Islands (VI).

Expounding on his plans to have officers trained, the newly appointed CFO charged that it will augur well for officers in terms of promotions, as well as, well roundedness

According to him, especially in the Administrative Department, individuals from other departments are seconded there, but he would like to see officers within handle such responsibilities.

“You see once you have officers in that [Admin] department they know how others feel and would be able to know what to do,” he explained.

McLean also envisions a more community friendly fire service and pointed out that strength of the Territory’s fire service is based on the strength of its officers.

Meanwhile, Virgin Islands News Online was reliably informed that a number of Virgin Islanders and individuals overseas applied for the position.

The vacancy, which was advertised since last year by the Department of Human Resources, stated that the salary scale is between $55,772 - $62,688 annually/Grade 16 commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Fire Officer William Penn, who had acted as the CFO prior to McLean’s appointment, will continue to serve as the Deputy.

Nonesense!!! What does he mean by having officers perform administrative duties? Persons who were recruited to serve as fire officers need to stay in that role. Why would you have a trained fire officer working in administration instead of having a qualified Administrative Officer or Accounting Officer to perform these duties? I cannot think of any other government department or agency that that provide essential services where administrative duties are not performed by civilian support staff. He is clearly inexperienced. I think they should have confirmed Penn in the post.

I see nothing wrong with what McLean has said about fire officers in administrative post. Who better to take over the responsibility of Deputy and Chief Fire Officer than a Fire Officer and other middle management post in the Fire Service. Aren't these post Administrative. McLean was appointed to the post because the PSC interviewed candidates and choose the best person for the job.

It look like you think we are all idiots right? Dancia was Deputy Premier for the 4yrs William was ACTING as CFO, why wasn't he appointed then? I'll tell you why, because unlike what you're trying to insinuate, the Government doesn't appoint these people, it's the PSC and DG Office that did so, stop the damn noise. All of a sudden the yampie out you all eyes and you can see right from wrong?

Unfortunately, there is a principle involved here. But trust me, what God doesn't want angels cannot have.
