Traditional kite flying event returns to Wickham's Cay I

Bottom: The traditional kite flying extravaganza hosted by the Guyanese Association of the BVI returned to Wickham’s Cay I on Easter Monday, March 28, 2016 after it was relocated last year to Duff’s Bottom due to the unavailability of the usual area due to construction work on the Tortola Pier Park. WICKHAM’S CAY I, Tortola, VI- The traditional kite flying extravaganza hosted by the Guyanese Association of the BVI returned to Wickham’s Cay I on Easter Monday, March 28, 2016 after it was relocated last year to Duff’s Bottom due to the unavailability of the usual area owing to construction work on the Tortola Pier Park.

As was expected, scores of families converged at the new area, a reclaimed portion of land behind the Central Administration Complex, for a day of kite flying, music, food and the usual social interactions.

Kites of various sizes, shapes and colours decorated the air, including a 10 ft kite that won the prize for the Biggest Kite in the kite flying competition.

The prize for the Highest Flying Kite went to Allyah Ashley while the award for the Prettiest Kite went Tyler Fraser.

For the second year in succession, Anthony Ramnarain won the prize for the Most Patriotic Kite- a kite with the colours of the flag of Guyana and which highlighted Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary being observed this year.

President of the Guyanese Association of the BVI, Mr Marvin O. Grant said the Association was thrilled to be back at Wickham’s Cay I and was pleased to see the large turnout of persons.

“I think it went well. It has become an activity that one looks forward to every year and also offers an option for those folks who are not desirous of attending the Virgin Gorda Easter Parade. We are happy that we were able to bring some family enjoyment and entertainment, clean fun as we say, to add to the BVI experience,” Mr Grant told Virgin Islands News Online.

Meanwhile, Minister for Communications and Works, Hon Mark H. Vanterpool had promised last year that Wickham’s Cay 1 would be ready for the kite flying event to return this year and the Association was pleased that it was able to do so.

“As you would recall, the Minister came when we were at Duff’s Bottom and he promised that we would be able to come back on the cay this Easter. They reclaimed the land in that time and we were able to use it, it was not in the best condition but we were able to use it and were quite happy that we were able to come back to our original venue where the ambiance is much greater than where we were last time,” Mr Grant stated.

Lol@are you really asking if Tolian's can fly a kit in Guyana...how does that make any bloody sense. What would physically stop someone from flying a kite in any foreign country much less Guyana.

At least make some type of reasonable sense before posting...my god, you don't win a prize for being stupid you know.

It is a shame to see how people here dislike their own Caribbean people. How they can not accept the fact that NO MATTER what they say, the country will continue to operate by both locals and foreigners. Locals! You can not expect to be SO SELFISH, you will NEVER succeed on your own! IT IS A FACT!! Do not be envious because Guyanese, Spaniards, Whites are here! Are you envious because they take your jobs??? Well you should be more qualified. Are you envious because they take your man??? Well you should be more catering and stop being so sly and malicious. DIVERSITY MAKES UP A COUNTRY! IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT THE FACTS, GO SIT DOWN BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT CHANGE IT! WE ARE ALL CHILDREN OF ALL PARTS OF LIFE. AND YOU ARE ISLAND PEOPLE TOO! THIS IS AN ISLAND!!!
