SEA COWS BAY, Tortola, VI - A smaller than expected crowd at the Ellis Thomas Downs Boxing Day races bore witness to the power and speed of Stephen Got Better as well as Town Hall, who both had comfortable wins to stamp their pedigree on proceedings.

The day’s races had opened over 6 ½ furlongs with True Essence of Zion Stables, beating Lesmore Smith’s Priority Express into second in a time of 1 26 and 3/5ths. Man From The Hill was third.

Tormento was scratched from race two over 7 furlongs leaving Good Boy Daddy to edge out Power Ten in a time of 1 45 and 1/5th. The horses had raced neck and neck almost all the way around until Good Boy Daddy gave Lesmore Smith his first win of the day.

Those who turned up to watch the annual event were treated to the closest finish in years in the 7 furlong Fillies and Mares race that saw Miss Homer adjudged the winner by a short nose over Orithyia.

Miss Homer, ridden by Jose Rios, led most of the way round, but Orithyia and jockey Michael Simple seemed to have timed their surge perfectly down the home straight to edge home by a nose at the finish line with the jockey raising his arm to celebrate a famous victory.

However after a delay which saw both horses parade around the winners circle, the judges decided that Miss Homer, on the inside, had in fact won the race.

The winning time was declared as 1 31 and 3/5ths, with Willa Bella third.

Race 4 over a mile saw Rodney Simmonds celebrate victory as Stephen Got Better made it a hat trick of wins, beating Square One and All Country with a time of 1 45 flat. Stephen Got Better, ridden by Carlos Lopez, took the lead down the home straight to win by a couple of lengths.

The Feature Race saw Town Hall hold off a spirited challenge from Buy Buy Buy (debut) to win in 1 53 flat. Mr. Gold Prospect was third.

All three horses had been neck and neck until the back straight when Town Hall, ridden by Jose Rios and Buy Buy Buy, ridden by Alberto Soto pulled away from Carlos Lopez and Mr. Gold Prospect.

Rios commented after the race that the horse really needs to move up in class now, which might mean a mouthwatering match up against Really Uptown, who is still on the comeback trail to full fitness. He also said the race track was playing even, the competition was stiff and it was a good race.
