Tortola objects to new horse entry in Triple Crown

- Bud White gets green light to run in St. Croix
St. Croix's Slevin, pictured here shortly after winning the first leg of the Triple Crown on January 15, 2012, will have a new challenger in Bud White of St. Thomas when the second leg kicks off in St. Croix on Sunday.
ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Despite objections from the Virgin Islands' Horse Owner's Association, new comer Bud White has been cleared to run in the second leg of the Johnny Walker Black VI Triple Crown Challenge at the Randolph ‘Doc’ James Race Track in St. Croix on February 19, 2012.

Bud White, a recently acquired horse in St. Thomas, did not participate in the first leg in Tortola and did not have any qualifying points either, which was one of the grounds for objection by the VI Horse Owners’ Association.

According to a reliable source, a vote was taken among the three associations and it was decided by a majority vote that the new horse should be allowed to run.

President of the St. Thomas Horse Racing Association Winston Benjamin said there were six horses pencilled in to run in St. Croix but there was space for two other horses in the feature race and the other horses with points either declined to participate or could not run for whatever reason hence Bud White, which Virgin Islands News Online understands was brought in specifically to challenge Slevin, was allowed.

In fact there would be eight horses in the feature race as Berberis of St. Croix has also been entered.

President of the VI Horse Owner's Association Lesmore Smith said it was not a case that there were any fears about the horse entering that the Association objected but that at this stage no new horse should have been allowed to enter. He said it was something that was discussed previously among the Associations but was not put in the guidelines for the Triple Crown.

Slevin of St. Croix won the first leg in Tortola in convincing fashion.

Meanwhile, tickets for the boat ride to St. Croix for the races are still available although they are being snapped up at the last minute. For more information call 544-4046, 443-3702 or 499-0196.

bud white is a sprinter, slevin is a distance runner this is a distant race 1 1/16mile. He will be a rabbit 4 somebody but not slevin. So he's no threat 2 da triple crown winner slevin.

Who gonna name their horse Butt-Wipe? This is just another example of the muck that is going on here in Tola. We need to stop this sick horses trying to run nonsense and build our cricket stadium real fast. There are no fleas with cricket - just massive crowds, big parties and lots of dollars for our economy.

Let him run, I don't want STX winning the Triple Crown and I don't see any Tola horse that can run Slevin. If another STX horse, STT horse or Tola horse win the second leg then no one wins the Triple crown this year. We need the big man out so he can bring in another horse close to the great Actspectation.

The USVI has always been unfair in their sport related dealings with the BVI. We Tortola people have no backbone, we need to start taking a stand, out of principle!!! The USVI will forever continue to dupe us, because we take it all with a smile! I say boycott them and keep our own race here! We keep letting them rule us, its time we take a stand!

We would like to thank all participant for coming to Stx to compete In the Ag Fair Day Races. As for the topic, the rules were never change to accommodate any one involved but like any new thing there are thing that will need to be address in the furture. Hopefully, the nessecary change will be fix with the input of the tri-island committee. So come and represent (B. V. I.) your horses and feel de earth move.

Lake cannot take part because it will then be 3 Tola horse in the race instead of 2 horses per island.

Listen i do agree with the fact that its a new horse in the race and that should have never been in the first place. The reason why they name it the tripple crown and have it on different tracks at different distances is to test the heart of these champs.......I have seen the triple crown all over america for years and as i was each leg there is a new horse entered in each race to change the dynamics of the race if you ever noticed, so lets not build a negative report around the new horse and lets sit back and watch history unfolds. But to say tola has always done what they want any ways, that is the first track i see that can change the distance of a race before post time without consulting all of the horse men in the race and also taking horses from that race a putting other horses in to make it to tola likings so lets no talk about being fare because tola is not fare at all when it comes to horse racing they do what they want especially if they feel they dont have a chance on winning the race at hand at that time so please stop with all this stuff. First off i don't see how East End Top allocated all those points to get into the race when you he be running once every blue moon and you have other horses in st croix that should have went in before him so please every track had its liniances when it came to entering a certain horse. So everyone please stop the crying and let us all sit back and enjoy history unfolding.
