ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio commentator and talk show host Donald E. de Castro is pushing to have the non-profit body Virgin Islanders for a Better Virgin Islands resuscitated after a lull of over two decades but is finding it challenging to attract persons to commit themselves to the cause.

According to a statement from de Castro, Virgin Islanders for a Better Virgin islands was a non-profit association established to identify and serve the interest of all Virgin Islanders and other residents. The association realises that politics tinges almost every issue in these islands and, whilst not shrinking from addressing issues relevant to the community, it is not a political party.

The association will, however, address, educate, inform and work towards the solution of issues in the Virgin Islands. It will act as a “watch dog” or action group on governmental and societal matters. The association will ensure that the interests of the Virgin Islands are served by the elected representatives.

The association will work with other community groups and enlist their assistance and cooperation whenever the goals and objectives of that group are in harmony with those of the association.

In a comment to this news site, de Castro said that while many people see the problems they are not often willing to be part of the solution and hence it was difficult to attract persons to join the organisation.

“We had an executive body…we functioned for about two or three years…and then people lost interest and stuff like that. Right now I have been talking to people and trying to get people interested. Everybody wants to talk and talk and nobody wants to do anything,” he said.

“There are a couple of people who are interested so I’m trying to get some more,” he said, noting that no board or executive body has yet been formed.

According to the statement from de Castro, the objectives of the body will be to maintain and strengthen the integrity of the culture of the Virgin Islands; Foster a spirit of unity and understanding among Virgin Islanders and other residents; Identify the needs and issues relevant to the community; Serve as a watch dog action group on issues facing the community; Hold workshops and lectures to educate and inform the community on relevant issues.

“With the assistance of Michelle Abbott-Smith and McLloyd O. Walters we established this organisation on September 14, 1987. I am now appealing to all Virgin Islanders who are interested in a better Virgin Islands to help in reviving this organisation. Virgin Islanders, the vast majority of us, know the problems and we talk a lot about the issues and problems. However, very few people today want to take action. Are you ready to be part of the solution? All interested Virgin Islanders can contact me at (284) 494 4629 or donald.decastro@gmail.com. You can also visit my Facebook page, The Virgin Islands: A British Overseas Territory,” appealed de Castro.

I commend Mr DeCastro's dedication and vision for a group which could become a powerful force. What we have been seeing are the wealthy gaining ground at the expense of the working class. Special interest groups are driving right over resident cries for fair play. I think this idea has merit. We have districts-- why can't we have district meetings once a month to list and discuss issues each has. Bigger political issues- but also what community jobs can be organized to help each other. We have trash-picking and beach cleaning. We can do more.
Each district can elect leaders or organizers, and then THEY can have meetings to see what issues they all have in common. Pressure from the people is a great tool. As he says, talk talk but no one will do anything.

@ my friend: great list of talkers on National Radio but we are in the BVI and those guys simply have freedom of speech: action speak louder than words but what's good about these talkers ZBVI is making monthly money, so that is definitely a plus.....

Mr. De Castro workers Union was a very hood initiative, it was a good thing bit he never got the support. the BVI people more concern with name and status rather than ideas and vision. certain people can walk is right into hell and we go along without resistance. then we find the worst adjectives for those who wants to lead us to heaven. We black Donkey don't blame the rider.

@ black donkey: great pont and you sound like a relative of Donald: leadership matters; you cant stand on your soap box and speak one thing then can't back up what you are saying up: talk is cheap look around, what has this guy done for the betterment of our territory; he is one of those guys that ran off to the USA now back home being a citric simply because he can't get his way or people not kissing his @$$( run quick and talk that)...remember life is about facts, life is not about feelings: Donald could have stayed in the territory like some of us and develop it to what we have today but he jump ship NOW trying to close the gate after the cow done gone.....just saying...stay black my friend!!!!

@ true: victimization is the oder of the day in modern day BVI; we know what needs to address in the territory; some folks are financial stable so they can speak out but most of us need our day jobs so most we can do is listen: if you speak up you will become an enemy of the State and subjected victimization..that is most why leader can do whatever
