ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- With their aim being to bring about the changes they wish to see in the Virgin Islands community, a number of young people have formed themselves into a group known as Together We Stand (TWS).

The group, according to Vice President Giselle George, was formed on June 16, 2016 and has been actively serving the community.

She said TWS recently helped an individual raise funds to take care of her child that is suffering from Diabetes.

Further, George said among the plans of the group are to have back to school fundraisers that would help less fortunate children be equipped for school as well as to assist homeless people.

“We want to sit with young people,” Ms George said, to help them to develop positive attitudes.

The group is currently about 33 and counting.

“The Together We Stand (TWS) group, which is new to the territory, is made up of everyday BVIslanders and residents, who want to see changes in their communities,” a press release from the group stated.

Drive out Ride out Poker Run

TWS hosted its first annual Drive out Ride out Poker Run on July 10, 2016.

The Poker Run stops included Callaloo on the Reef, Captain Mulligans, Stoutt’s Look Out Bar, Paradise Club Roadside Bar and Grill, Village Cay Hotel and Marina and then back to Callaloo on the Reef.

Mr Roy L. Garroway was the grand prize winner of the $2500 cash prize, while the 2nd place winner was Asha Frazer, who received a cash prize of $1500.

The 3rd place winner was Shaniqua Mitcham, who pocketed $1000, 4th place winner was Shamekah Smith with a cash prize of $600, while 5th place went to Akeymo Percival who received a cash prize of $400.

The proceeds from this event, according to TWS, will be going towards the financing of a stove for The Safe Haven Transitional Centre, formally known as the Sandy Lane Centre.

"TWS is a month old group primarily created to assist the British Virgin Islands in whatever way they can by helping within and giving back to the different communities. The aim is to help the homeless, the schools and the elderly just to name a few,” the press release stated.

The President of the group is Mr Jason Thompson, also known as ‘Daddy Braff’ and Vice President is Ms Giselle George.

Together We Stand (TWS) group would like to thank their Sponsors: Paint Factory, Traders Choice, BMSA, Cliff Williams, Aflair, P3 Paper Plastic Products, B&B Trucking, JC Business Service Ltd, Styler, Dave Douglas of Zrod, Garvin Stoutt and Rudy’s Bar JVD. this is great to see the next generation step up. I hope they have wise leaders so the effort isn't wasted down the road. It is from groups like these that fresh leaders emerge for territory elections. It is a way to see leaders in action and see priorities.
Just one comment-- sincerely-- I wonder if the prize money can be scaled back so the group can build a bigger account for bigger issues, like affordable housing or getting together and clearing brush from historic ruins around the islands. That would contribute to quality of life and the tourist draw. Also, with building of finances, you become a political power- not that that is the goal. I just mean that your opinion will matter down the road.
At only several months old, I fully support and congratulate the organizers of such an effort.!!
