'Today is a bit strange'- Hon Maduro-Caines on 1st HoA as VIP member
"This is my African print in honour of African Month (Black History Month)," she said to members of the press outside the HoA on Thursday, February 20, 2020.
The VIP's party colour is green while the NDP is red.
'Strange' first HOA
Meanwhile, Hon Maduro-Caines said "Today is a bit strange because for the past year I have been accustomed to being in the opposition. I don't necessarily have a plan but the way I look at the country today, all hands have to be on deck when it comes to your people and the enrichment of your people."
Hon Maduro-Caines said as it relates to the members of the Opposition, while they expressed their disappointment that she did not give them adequate notice that she intended to resign, "you cannot really do something like that. You just have to move."
She continued: "I have nothing against my opposition colleagues, but sometimes we have to rise above party politics."
Background
The third term legislator's aisle-crossing was announced by Premier Hon Andrew A. Fahie (R1) at a press conference on January 20, 2020, which was subsequently confirmed by Hon Maduro-Caines.
According to Premier Fahie, Hon Maduro-Caines has bought into the vision of the VIP Government and has chosen to join the VIP to help it push its agenda for national development.
On the other hand, Hon Maduro-Caines told reporters she decided to join the VIP after much deep contemplation and prayer over a period of time as well as speaking to some of her constituents, who have supported her decision.
She said she tendered her resignation to the National Democratic Party (NDP) on the same day. The female legislator said she considered the vision by Hon Fahie in the 2020 Budget Address and believes it is a plan deserving of full support for all patriotic citizens.
She further said, she has seen the progress of the VIP Government since taking office despite obstacles and was particularly impressed with the programmes that help industry training and academic qualifications for Virgin Islanders.
"I believe that is the direction our Territory must be headed," she stated at the time.
