ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host Douglas Wheatley said that now is an opportune moment for the territory to commence talks with the United Kingdom with a view to gaining more autonomy.

He was speaking on his latest radio show ‘Speak Out BVI’ aired on Tuesday February 24, 2015 on ZBVI 780 AM.

A caller asked the host whether or not he thought constitutional reform could bring the Territory closer to self-governance other than independence.

In response, Wheatley said that according to a lot of persons he would have spoken with, anything beyond where the territory is would be independence.

Wheatley said that the recent referendum in Scotland should serve as an eye opener to the possibilities of greater autonomy.

“I believe that the referendum that took place in Scotland is precedent setting for the whole of the United Kingdom and its Overseas Territories,” he said. However, he pointed out that in the discussion that took place nobody said anything about the rest of what comprises the United Kingdom outside of England and Wales.

“I think that there is an opportunity for us to speak with the British and try to move our autonomy, just like how Scotland, England and Wales are going to get more, we the Overseas Territories should get more as well,” he said.

“In the US Virgin Islands they have a delegate to Congress. In the Netherland Antilles they also have somebody in the Parliament [of the Netherlands]. We here don’t have anybody in the [UK] Parliament. I agree with you that there can be some other steps taken besides going for independence,” said Wheatley in response to the caller.

What more do you want? We make our own money, we spend our own money, we hire our own people, we elect our own Government. We only have UK pressure at this time because of mismanagement of finances. Once we get back to healthy reserves we will not have to seek UK permission to borrow again. I think these guys just love to talk because someone sponsor them time on the radio. What more autonomy can the BVI get at this time? UK doesn't get any of our money from our revenues, they don't get involved with our voting etc. Our PSC is local and who deals with employment at Government level. The Governor is the UK representative and is technically responsible for civil servants. Again, what more autonomy do we want? We already control our money and our Government, our Education etc. Doug and these guys need to elaborate instead of making general statements laced with ignorance. We don't need any delegate to London either as we are involved with meetings on a regular basis as is done with all OTs.

Dougie you want the government to have free reins with no oversight from UK? Well, go that route and we will be worse off than Bangladesh. No UK over sight will open the flood gates for anything to happen. The government now is heavy handed in spending the people's money, discriminating and favouring who they want, no UK oversight, I am gone along with all foreign investors, Trust Companies and expatriates living here. No Tourism? Please rethink your position. I hope no body listens to you.
