This Week We Feature Young Professional Xavier I. Pemberton
He has been into martial arts from since the tender age of six and may certainly be well versed in the tactics of self defense; nevertheless this individual is as humble as a lamb, mannerly, disciplined and is no doubt a people’s person- qualities that make this young professional a success in his customer service field of employment.
This week we feature young professional Xavier I. Pemberton.
Xavier is an SME Sales Executive at telecommunications giant LIME BVI. SME means ‘Small, Medium Enterprises’ of which those clients would need to see Xavier as their first point of contact if they may be having any issues with their telecommunication services. “If there are any issues, queries or concerns they come to me and I get them on the way to resolving whatever it is.”
A product of the then BVI High School, Xavier said his job may be challenging at times but always exciting. He has been in sales for some seven years as he worked for some time at Columbian Emeralds before going over to Little Switzerland prior to connecting with LIMI BVI.
“It’s a different learning curve altogether but at this level I would say it is a lot more hands on in terms of project managing but sales still play a big part in terms of what I do.”
Xavier said he enjoys the interaction with the customers the most and is always pleased to be in a position to help solve their telecommunication issues. That for him is his biggest self gratification and which keeps him fully charged on the job. “That for me is the most important thing and keeping my professionalism and offering the best possible service. At the end of the day the idea is to ensure that the customers are satisfied, whether you are into jewelry or telecoms or anything else. They want to know that you are playing an active role in fulfilling their needs. That is something I will take with me no matter what job I am in.”
Xavier leapt straight into the world of work on leaving High School and his first job was in 2002 at Survey Department as a clerical officer. “That is where I started off dealing with customers and where customer service was very important. I was pretty much one of the staff that dealt with the questions and concerns or if any one needed plans or drawings or anything.”
Our Young Professional admitted that where he is today may not be exactly where he would have seen himself some years ago but takes comfort in the notion that very few people end up where they would have seen themselves when they were younger. “I am not disappointment where I am it. It is actually something different where I would have probably seen myself but I went through different learning curves. What I would say is that where I am at is better off where I hoped to be so I am happy.”
Xavier also disclosed that he never really pinpointed what he wanted to be and had chosen to take opportunities as they presented themselves. “I was always more or less looking at opportunities and didn’t hone into anything in particular.”
This young man has a clearer idea where he wants to be now and though not disclosing exactly what it is, he is certain that it will have to be in the customer service industry although as a self-employed person.
Our young professional revealed that one of the things that kept him in line and positive as a youth was his involvement in martial arts. “I have been doing karate since I was just about six years old. That was one of the biggest things that moulded me into the person I am today.”
Xavier is a First Degree Black Belt but has been inactive for the past couple of years. He said he intends to get back into martial arts but as an instructor, which he already has experience in. His son already started doing martial arts a few weeks ago and this is one of the reasons he is being drawn back into it.
Our Young Professional also has the enviable experience of being a model, which he said gave him a lot of confidence and exposure as well as opportunities to travel. “It was fun while it lasted but I don’t think that is something I would probably get back into.”
Admitting that even with his cool and positive attitude and the discipline offered by martial arts, there are sometimes challenges that may come his way and which would call on his experience, discipline and character to overcome. One of his favourite weapons to overcome his challenges whenever they may arise is what he describe as his “serenity” character, “to accept the things I can’t change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference between the two.”
And while many persons may be wishing they had a “mom”, Xavier is very fortunate to have two moms, “a step mom and my biological mom, those are the two strongest figures in my life. I always look to both of them for advice and strength and to get to the next level,” he proudly disclosed to Virgin Islands News Online.
Turning his attention to youth, Xavier opined that “things are getting harder and the kids are becoming exposed to a lot more things at a younger age but that it has its good and its bad. A lot of kids mature more quickly and excel beyond the average rate but there are others declining quicker than the average rate. So I think it’s a mixture.”
His advice then to youth is to keep focus on their goals while surrounding themselves with positive influences. “No matter what you are doing or what you are into, take it seriously and know that is where you want to be or want to go. You have to push every day, practice makes perfect so you have to keep at it and try to find different ways to get exposure, travelling or understudying someone who has already achieved what you are trying to accomplish. Everybody needs help and nobody is going to get there on their own, which is something that people have to recognise.”
