This Week We Feature Young Professional Trevor L. Walters
Many are the great men and women on earth, some dead and many still alive, whom youth and others in today's society would choose as their 'hero' at a click of a finger.
In the case of our Young Professional For This Week, Trevor L. Walters, there is no man or woman that can surpass his God to take such honour. He is a young man who is rooted in the love for God and the faith. "My number one hero is God, then my family, friends and pastors. Special Thanks to Pastor Steve Turnbull for being a mentor and friend."
Trevor went through the academic ranks as most persons on Virgin Gorda, having had his primary and secondary education at the Bregado Flax Educational Centre (BFEC). Showing the aptitude to succeed academically he was awarded a scholarship which allowed him to attend the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) where he obtained an Associate’s Degree in Hospitality Management before venturing overseas to further his studies.
"I then transferred to Bethune-Cookman University where I got my Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management," he said.
'Naturally a pleaser'
"To be in the hospitality industry, you have to be able to please people," said Walters as he spoke of his beat where he is today employed with the BVI Tourist Board. He said he is most fitted for that position as he is naturally a pleaser.
But while he has satisfied the 'people pleasing side of him in the government system, he had recognised the need for developing the water sporting industry in the Virgin Islands (VI) and this saw him, while holding on to his day job, venturing out into the area of water sports.
"In another five to ten years I can see myself venturing off from water sports and going into real estate, most likely in the hospitality industry or thereabout," he said as he spoke to his future ambition. But the story behind him, showing that a dream can become a reality once one perseveres, is best told in the story of himself and cousin Joshua N. Wheatley’s quest to bring water sports to another level on the island of Virgin Gorda, the place he savours as home.
Advice to Youth
Given his life story, experiences and ambitions our Young Professional for this week, when asked what would be his advice to youth, Trevor said he would definitely stick on the topic that he would caption "Changing your mindset will change your outcome!”
"Knowing that most people fail in life not because they aim too high and miss, no, most people fail in life because they aim too low and many never aim at all, they just go through life surviving. Children these days need to re-programme their minds and in order to do that they need to listen to motivational speakers such as Les Brown, Earl Nightingale and Bob Proctor."
