Here we have a young man of faith, a man with a passion for people and country, all evident in his love for serving and staying faithful to God, being actively involved in his community. Where it comes to country, he has stepped forward to show his ambition of getting to the level of the country’s leadership as he is the Deputy Premier and Minister of the Virgin Islands Youth parliament. This individual is Our Young Professional for the Week – Trevaughn ‘Tre’ Todman (R7YP).

Trevaughn, who is also referred to as a ‘Man on a Mission’, reflected on his experiences growing up that brought him to where he is today. “Growing up I would spend plenty time with my grandmother. Being with her, I have had the experience of rearing animals and planting and numerous adventures of exploring Pleasant Valley and learning about what her early years of life were like.”

Many of his grandmother’s traditions have rubbed off on him. “It is alright to say I have been called a young old man before.”

Trevaughn started off his educational pursuits at the Ebenezer Thomas Primary School in Sea Cows Bay and later moved on to the Elmore Stoutt High School from where he graduated in 2013.

He said that his days at Elmore Stoutt High School have helped to mold him into who he is today. “When it was time to select the programme that I wanted to finish my senior years with, I was not satisfied with the options. Then I saw the programme Industrial Technology. I was not sure if that was what I wanted to do, but I tried it and today I am still interested in that same field, which I am presently completing my Associates Degrees in Construction Technology, Architecture and Engineering and Land Surveying.”

His career goal is to one day become a Project Manager/Contractor. Presently, however, he is employed as a Teacher Assistant at H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

“Reason for choosing the said career was based on my desire of being able to help someone with getting a roof over their heads. The beauty of constructing structures and with the last name, Todman, helps to hint who my father is: Owner and Founder of James Todman Construction Limited,” he said.

Even though his professional aspiration is in construction, Holy Order of Priesthood is also a desire of his heart. “My life is based around the church, 70% of the time if anyone is in search of me, I am most likely at church. St Paul's Episcopal Church in Sea Cows Bay is my place of worship. I have a passion for ministry, be it God's will one day the Anglican Church can look forward to having me on its list of active Clergymen.”

At church he serves as one of the organists, Junior Choir Director, Altar Server, Bishop's Committee member, member of the Diocesan Liturgy and Music Committee. “Music is my life, especially playing the organ. I am one of a handful of young organists that can actually play an organ the right way. My hobbies, in my pastime I can be heard by anyone passing St Paul’s Church on weekends or during the week, playing to my heart's delight on the organ or at St George's on Main Street,” he said with a sweet smile on his face.

Trevaughn also has a love for fungi music. “Growing up I would look forward to going to events that the Lashing Dogs would provide entertainment. The opportunity came when a group of us from Sea Cows Bay decided to come together and form a group to serenade at Christmas time, which has formed the Razor Blades Fungi Band.”

The community side of him is evident in his involvement with the group ACT- Alternative Community Transformation of the 3rd District. ACT is a group formed to promote camaraderie and caring for elders, persons in need, youth and all persons within the 3rd District of the Virgin Islands and wider community.

“We recently donated school supplies to all Schools in the District and continue to come up with ways to best serve the community. The group consists family and friends in Sea Cows Bay.”

The passion for country came to fore with his involvement in the Virgin Islands Youth Parliament. “When a friend of mine told me that there was a need for members to join the parliament I didn't give it a second thought, I was determined to join. I have a love for politics and so I joined to explore that possibility. Who knows, one day I might be representing the people as an elected representative.”

His philosophy of life is once you have the breath of life our mission on earth is to be a blessing to each other. This guides his advice to the youth of today. “There is no need to fight for material things, when we die, we cannot carry them with us. Helping others on your way to the Promised Land, being a blessing to others. Keeping in mind that sometimes the only Bible someone might read is us. They will judge us by our actions and so our actions/lives should reflect Christ.”

He added, “With all that being said, I close with these words by Charles Wesley - To serve the present age, my calling to fulfill. O may it all my powers engage to do the master's will.”

Outstanding pick! Knowing Tre, I am confident that he will succeed in his endeavours. He actively serves at St. Paul's and gives assistance at St. George's whenever he can. Additionally, he makes beautiful music on the church organs and with the Razor Blades Fungi Band. Anyone who knows Tre well, knows of his passion for ministry, and I can only hope that the entire Virgin Islands community supports him on his mission.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this article. I pray that Tre will be an inspiration for our youths to follow. With his strong faith in God I have every confidence that he will continue to be a blessing to not only his Sea Cows Bay community, but that the entire Territory will benefit from his gifts and talents.

    Go Tre, Go!!! God bless.
