This Week We Feature Young Professional Tammi T. David
This week’s Young Professional is a multi-talented pageant queen and Tourism professional who enjoys being in the spotlight as much as she can while being equally involved in mentoring and other similar activities.
Virgin Islands News Online proudly presents Tammi T. David
Our Young Professional for this week was born and raised in Tortola where she attended the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and Elmore Stoutt High School.
Ms David disclosed that she did not finish high school as she quit in fourth form before beginning her journey into the world of work.
Though she wanted to work in the hospitality industry, Tammi felt at the time that she would be better able to secure a position in the field on the force of her personality.
While she did quit school, Tammi eventually returned to complete her high school diploma and also secured a certificate in Travel & Tourism; she is now studying online with the aim of completing her Associate’s Degree. “I’m getting back there,” she said.
She worked at a few hotels including Treasure Isle and the Long Bay Hotel among others before later moving on to the Tourist Board to become an Information Officer. “I wanted a change,” Tammi said, “not away from the hospitality industry but I [wanted to] be somewhere that was a bit more firm.”
Her basis for this was that she didn’t want to worry about her bills being paid or her hours being cut whenever the [tourist] season slowed down.
Tammi now works as an Information Officer with the BVI Tourist Board and said she enjoys her job very much. “My job at the Tourist Board, I must say I have learned a lot and it’s pretty much of a challenge for me at times,” she related.
The 30-year-old serves at information centres at various ports including the airport, Cruise ship dock, ferry dock and sometimes even on the Cruise Ship where her role is to provide material to tourists and locals who are in search of information. “They want to know where the nice beaches are…” Tammi explained, “beaches that they can swim and relax or beaches where they can snorkel, beaches with facilities, beaches with activities… that kind of thing…”
There are also occasions where she would be required to assist persons with filling forms online to do their online booking for airline tickets as well. Our Mission statement at the BVI Tourist Board is to lead the tourism sector for the British Virgin Islands with purpose pride and excellence, ensuring substainability of our product and a high quality visitor experience. "I am so happy I can be part of something like this where I can assist in making sure the Tourist has a breath taking experience," she disclosed.
Tammi explained that her motto is, ‘do good, be kind and blessings will follow you’ and she also lives by Elmore Stoutt’s motto which is ‘can as much as you can while you can’.
A former pageant queen, Tammi described herself as having always been a ‘spotlight’ person and it is clear to see why. She has been involved in and around the pageant scene for over ten years.
Her first pageant was Ms Glamourous in 2002 and many more followed including Ms International Bold & Beautiful which she won in 2007 in St Thomas; Ms. Caribbean Culture 2011 which she won; she also came 1st runner up in Ms Big & Beautiful in 2011 in St Kitts & Nevis, the birthplace of her parents. Tammi revealed that she is scheduled to compete in two pageants later this year in Philadelphia and The Bahamas.
“I enjoy representing my country in International pageants, because there I get a chance to work and have fun doing it, while putting a little twist to it …” she added.
“I can go into the pageants, where I go overseas, and if there are international pageants, then I have to promote my country…” she added.
Her various interests outside of her vocation are not limited to pageants however, as she is also a Lieutenant in the Girls’ Brigade and volunteers as a teacher for students after school.
“I tell people, if you want to have a second job, it should be something that you want to do,” Tammi explained, “something that you would like, rather than having to work for another establishment where you’re limited.”
Tammi also works as a vendor at times, selling toys and candy to meet short term financial goals that she would establish for herself and enjoys talking to older persons in the community, where she can learn and grow more. "My goal everyday is to learn something new in that I get to become more knowledgeable," she said.
The Information Officer also aspires to one day become the head of the Tourist Board and also take a stab at running for political office. “I’m working my way up,” she said with a smile.
Tammi also said that things are much different these days, but she would still encourage young persons to follow Elmore Stoutt’s creed to ‘can as much as you can while you can’.
The world on a whole, she felt, was not getting any easier and is becoming more and more competitive. “I would encourage young people to stick it out, stay in school, go to college and educate yourself as much as you can because it will be beneficial for you in the long run,” she advised.
