When Albert Einstein said “Creativity is intelligence having fun” he was definitely talking about our Young Professional this week. Entrepreneur, designer and creative extraordinaire, we introduce to you, Shermel S. Maduro-Skelton.

Awe in Creativity

When you walk into any event it is the decoration that you first notice, and if it is one that was done by our Young Professional you will have no choice but to be in awe. Shermel is the owner of Enchanted Designs, an events planning and decorating company that definitely brings the wow factor to every event decoration.

“The services that I provide are planning and decorating services for birthday parties, baby and bridal showers, anniversaries, ceremonies, reunions and balloon bouquets for any occasions,” she explained.

Shermel is proof that with the right encouragement and support from friends we all can be guided to achieve our fullest potentials. “I did a balloon arch for a friend’s baby shower, she was so pleased by my work that she encouraged me to take decorating seriously and start a business. And that was the start of Enchanted Designs VI.”

Happy hobby to happy job

What started out as a hobby just assisting friends is now a flourishing decoration business that has done children’s birthday parties with Disney character themes, baby dedications and sweet sixteen parties to name a few. This creative train started rolling two years ago and there is no sign of it stopping or slowing down.

When your job is making people happy you have no choice but to love it. Shermel says “I enjoy seeing the look of happiness and satisfaction on my clients’ faces when they see the decorations for their event.  I also enjoy working with balloons, creating and constructing designs, I find it very therapeutic.”

Challenges

However, even making people happy will have some challenges. In a career that is heavily dependent on imports there is bound to be some hiccups. “Some of the challenges I face with events are usually shipping of items to the British Virgin Islands, especially after the hurricane.”

With ingenuity and proper planning; however, Shermel is able to pull off any job. She added, “To prevent delays of items I advise my potential clients to contact me a minimum of 3weeks before the event. And I also try my best to keep the most popular items in stock.”

There is no doubt that Shermel has the skill and creativity to succeed in the ever changing world of event planning and decorating, a job that she plans to master and expand with many more satisfied clients.

Schooling & Education

A true product of the Virgin Islands, Shermel first attended the Alexandrina Maduro Primary School in Baughers Bay before pursuing her secondary education at the then BVI High School (now Elmore Stout High School). She then moved on to the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) where she studied Hotel Management.

Not being one to stop halfway, our Young Professional is currently pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Florida International University.

This she hopes will make her more marketable in the tourism sector, where she hopes to also have a career.

Hobbies/Inspiration

Since all work and no play would make Shermel a ‘dull girl,’ she ensures to have some fun. According to her she unwinds and have fun, mostly enjoying reading, swimming, playing with makeup and doing craft, though it could be said that doing craft is more like Research and Development (R&D) for work.

With such strong work ethics and life principles Shermel says persons that inspire her are Joann Brown of Celebration Ltd (Cayman Islands), former First Lady of the United States of America Michelle L. R. Obama and world renowned motivational speaker Lisa Nichols.

Advice to youth

Our creative and focused Young Professional encourages young people to love what they do and do what they love, something that has put her on the straight path to success. “Set goals and write down the necessary steps that you need to take to accomplish each goal. Take each day as an opportunity to do better and to be greater at whatever you decide to do.”
