This Week We Feature Young Professional Sherece R. Fahie-Vanterpool
With a busy schedule to juggle, our Young Professional for this week Sherece R. Fahie-Vanterpool has a passion for holistic living which has driven her to develop personal care products she hopes will take off in the market, even as she keeps her day job as a graphic artist with the Government of the Virgin Islands.
Fahie-Vanterpool, born on the island of Tortola, VI, considers herself someone who enjoys helping people and who is keen on making it big in the business world.
She attended the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and went on to the then BVI High School. She studied at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College for two years after which she graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Computer Studies. She said she was always very focused in her school years.
“I was always into technology so by the time I got to fifth form I already knew that I was going to get into some aspect of technology,” said our Young Professional.
“I started out in programming, which I enjoyed very much, but I decided later on to branch out into the more creative field of designing. I very much love art,” she said.
Climbing the corporate ladder
Asked where she sees herself in five years’ time, our Young Professional said she is climbing the corporate ladder and also making strides with her own personal business so in five years there is no telling where she might be. “I would like to see my business launched in five years while still working with Government,” said Fahie-Vanterpool.
“Actually I was working with the Government before I started college, with the Department of Information Systems Unit at the time,” she recalls. “I went away to Florida State University where I got my Bachelor's in Information Science. I came back home and I got a job as a Graphic Artist with the Department of Information and Public Relations. So I have been working with the Department since 2002 as a Graphic Artist,” she said.
“I further went on to get my chartered management diploma. She told this news site that while she aims to further her studies she wants to make sure that it will be in an area that is in high demand.
“I definitely want to go ahead and get a master’s degree,” he said.
The business
Speaking of her products, Fahie-Vanterpool said she is considering going large scale but for now it is just a small operation.
“I have created some products which I have been using for a while now for hair and skin care,” saying that she is into holistic living and eliminating chemicals from the body.
“I have started marketing them to the people around me but I haven’t started marketing them in a large scale as yet,” she said.
Fahie-Vanterpool said that the products she has created have been getting rave reviews. She said that they are 100 percent hand made. “All of the ingredients are carefully selected, I’ve researched all of them and what they are good for, the safety, the usage percentage and all of that. So I purchase all of the ingredients and everything is hand made,” she said. “People have been asking me to go on a large scale with it and that is why I am trying to push it a little bit more,” said Fahie-Vanterpool.
Our Young Professional said that she likes to help people in whatever avenue or aspect that she can. “I like giving information. I read a lot and do a lot of research so I like giving information to people out there so that they could be more aware about the things that they use and even in life in general."
Asked how she manages being a mother of two, working with the Government and running her own business, she said it takes a lot of focus, discipline and time management on her part, as the children cannot be left unattended. “If you want to develop a good reputation out there when you get orders from people you can’t have them waiting weeks upon weeks.
So it takes a lot of discipline…a lot of late night hours because you can’t leave the kids unattended,” she said.
'Stay focused'
Her advice to youths is to stay focused since there are many distractions out there. “There are a lot of different things that can throw people off course. Definitely I would advise the young people to have a goal for your life that you can chart your way through. But the key element is to stay focused,” she said.
