This week’s Young Professional, Shari’a M. Romney, enjoys catering to the needs of livestock as she works as an Agricultural Trainee for the Department of Agriculture. In her spare time she engages in the sport of martial arts.

It has only been ten months since Shari’a entered into the field of Agriculture, but she possesses a profound passion for what she does and a strong desire to help out where she can.

Her job as an Agricultural Trainee entails assisting the Veterinarians and Veterinarian Assistants with livestock animals such as pigs, goats and sheep.

“We go on ambulatory calls to assist farmers with their livestock animals; if they need medicine or simple advice”, explained the trainee.

Shari’a also explained that she assists in controlling the number of stray animals on the road, for the protection of citizens.

Another task that our Young Professional plays a role in is doing permits for animals.

Passion for helping others

Shari’a expressed that she would like to become a certified Veterinarian in the future.

“I see myself as a Veterinarian. I want to make a difference in the community and be an inspiration to others”, said the young trainee.

The difference she would like to make in the community entails helping farmers to take better care of their animals.

Our Young Professional also said, “I would like to see my legacy being teaching; showing others what I have learnt.”

Overcoming challenges by researching

Shari’a shared that her challenge as a Young Professional has been not getting enough experience in the field over the last few weeks.

“The challenge in the field, I would say, is not having more experience out in the field as there has been a decline in ambulatory calls for the past few weeks.”

However, the Agricultural Trainee expressed that she overcomes this struggle simply by conducting her own research.

“Overcoming that challenge is going online and doing research; choosing schools and exploring more about the field”, she said.

Inspired by Martial Arts

“It has expanded my mind in so many different ways such as confidence and determination,” said Shari’a on her beloved Martial Arts hobby.

Shari’a stated that it aids in building a strong mind and has served as her inspiration.

She attends the Purple Dragon, a martial arts school in Road Town, and is anticipating a Black Belt next week.

Education

Miss Shari’a M. Romney started out at the St George’s Primary School before making a switch to the Enis Adams Primary School.

Upon completion of her primary education, Shari’a attended the Elmore Stoutt High School and then the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC).

She graduated from HLSCC with an Associate’s Degree in Marine Technology.

With ambitions of becoming a Veterinarian, Shari’a will soon embark on getting her official certification.

Advice to young people

Shari’a M. Romney encourages young people to be the best at what they enjoy doing.

“The best piece of advice right now that I can give is to become the greatest version of yourself”, she said.

She concluded, “People can become their greatest version by doing what they love to do and being the best person, they can be at it.”

Great career path! I don't think there are enough vets in the Virgin Islands and I am glad to see the youth being interested in this field.
