This Week We Feature Young Professional Sabrina N. Hodge
Our Young Professional for this week, Sabrina N. Hodge, has a passion for the culinary arts. She commenced studies in the field but due to circumstances she had to put those studies on hold while she was halfway through.
However, while the 27 year old has her eyes on the hospitality sector and hopes to one day become an executive chef at one of the many Virgin Islands tourism establishments, she has already cemented a solid career in the corporate world.
Hodge currently works at LIME BVI and has been there for the past eight years. She is also the President of the Althea Scatliffe Primary School Alumni Association.
Born on the main island of Tortola and raised in Road Town, our Young Professional had her educational beginnings at the Enid Scatliffe Pre-Primary School before moving on to the Althea Scatliffe Primary School and then the BVI High School.
She acknowledged that while she was not an honour roll student, she nevertheless remained steadfast and determined to achieve her goal of becoming qualified in the culinary arts to the point where she enrolled at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) to read for an Associate’s Degree in Food and Beverage Management.
“I did not come out with honours. I was ranked 63rd out of about 200 students. I went to college but I haven’t completed it,” she said. She added that her work schedule conflicted with her studying.
Hodge works at LIME BVI and her job title is Business Sales Support, a position that she has held since October 2011. As Business Sales Support she is an administrator who inputs all information into the system whenever the business manager goes out and makes sales. She would also get the technicians to execute the job for the clients.
Prior to this position she worked as a Retail Sales Associate having joined the company back in 2008. “I would say that it was because of my business aptitude that I was promoted to this new position,” she said.
Hodge disclosed that despite advancing in the corporate telecommunications world, she still wants to complete her Food and Beverage Management Associate’s Degree. She noted that she wanted to do culinary arts but did not as she is not too fond of the seafood aspect of food.
“But I do intend to either run a hotel one day or to work in a restaurant,” she said. “I like food and I like being in the kitchen. I like how you can manipulate the taste of food and I like when my food is well received and the compliments I get when it tastes good.”
Our Young Professional said that prior to her embarking on the course at HLSCC, she would do quite a bit of cooking at home for her family and friends. She added that until now she is asked to prepare food for her co-workers when there are special occasions and gatherings.
Hodge said that depending on what happens in the future she hopes not to have to give up her job at LIME BVI if she gets a chance to get into the culinary field.
She further said while she may not have a clear path as to the direction she hopes to take professionally, she is adamant that she needs to finish the Food and Beverage Management Associate's Degree and will be returning to the HLSCC in 2016.
In offering words of advice to young people she said, “Don’t sell yourself short. If you have a dream do what you have to do to reach for it.”
