This week’s young professional has a cool and gentle personality but don’t confuse that as a weakness when coming up against her on a football field or you will end up eating grass.

Laura N. Pompey saves her gentle personality for her job as an Office Administrative Assistant at a local law firm, where she said her main duty is to provide assistance in the various departments.

Having been employed by the law firm for just over a year, Laura said she enjoys working in the different departments and learning what each one does and how it contributes to the success of the firm.

Previously, Laura worked at a Trust company as a secretary.

Our young professional admitted, however, that where she is working now is not where she saw herself while in school.

“This is definitely not the job I dreamt about as I was growing up, but I can’t say I regret it. As a child, whenever I was asked what I wanted to become when I grow up, my answer was always the same, a police officer. I wanted to help restore/maintain law and order within the community.”

After graduating from high school, Laura studied Small Business Administration at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) but said she had to put off furthering her tertiary education to work, “but I intend to rectify that in the near future.”

Talented Football Player

On the football field, Laura has continued to demonstrate that she is a levelheaded and disciplined athlete, making her one of the top female football players in the territory. Her ability in the game has propelled her on to the national team as a sturdy central defender.

“I have been playing football on a club level for just about eight years now. It was always something fun to do after school or weekends.”

Laura said she started showing more interest in the sport when a professor at the college organised a small tournament during her first year at the college.

She is now one of the senior members of the formidable Ballstarz FC, which is undoubtedly the top female football squad in the Virgin Islands.

As a football player, Laura has had the opportunity to proudly represent the Virgin Islands on several occasions. “I was able to travel with some remarkable young ladies to represent the BVI in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Anguilla and St Maarten.”

Our young professional said she loves being active and football definitely allows her to achieve that.

“Like most sports, football teaches you about discipline, teamwork and respect,” something that is naturally a part of Laura’s character.

Laura also has an interest in being an official in the sport and is currently involved in refereeing.

“I joined the programme as a way of always being a part of the sport even after I stop playing.”

When she is not at work at the law firm or on the football field giving strikers hell in the defence, Laura may use her free time to do some reading, eating and going to the beach.

As for persons that inspired her, Laura said her late grandmother “has always been an inspiration to me, as well as my female cousins. They are all the epitome of strong women.”

Advice to youth

Laura N. Pompey advices youth to focus on being the best they can be. “There will be mistakes and road blocks, but don’t let them be the end of your journey.”
