This Week We Feature Young Professional Khari J. Adams
Our choice of Young Professional for this week is a young man who considers himself to be the shy kind of guy but a person who is not afraid to take the path to success with boldness.
He is Mr Khari J. Adams, someone who several of his friends consider a very ambitious, courageous and productive man.
"Yes he will tell you that he likes being in the background of things, yes he will tell you that he looks for no praises for anything that he does but in spite of all of that he is a role model to many of us young men out here and he might not even know so,” said a special colleague of his who chose to remain anonymous.
Those are true points of Mr Adams as he did say the very things during his interview with this news site. He told us that many persons see the public side of him as he loves photography and has been doing so as one of his main careers.
Otherwise, he is also a qualified architect and exhibits his skills, knowledge and passion as he partners with his dad in a privately owned business.
"As a professional I am a trained architect and part time everyone knows me as a photographer. I used to do drafting by hands but everything is done on computer now," said Mr Adams.
Telling his story of how he got into the line of architecture as profession, he said his dad Edwin Adams is and has always been an architect for as long as he could remember. "Dad has been doing that even before I was born so I have always been exposed to that type of occupation. I am a part of a family of builders and he is one of the few architects that are in the family."
Because he sees himself as the outdoor kind of guy, he quickly took to the liking of the line of work as his father. "I don't like to be stuck behind a computer all the time or locked in an office and those sorts of things. I like to be always on the move getting things done."
While at high school he quickly got the assurance that his calling for a career was in the very field that he is in today especially as he, from that level, was a master in the area of technical drawing. "I was sort of taking a liking to engineering but to be honest that was too much maths for me and I didn't find it as being as creative as I would have wanted to be. Architecture had a more artistic side and I love that aspect and that was how I really stayed in that direction and followed in my father's footsteps."
For Mr Adams, despite the fact that he had some assurance of what he would have wanted as a profession, he didn't go straight on to getting the higher levels of tertiary qualifications but thought it best to test out the waters, so to speak, before making a final decision.
He said that having left high school he decided to work with his dad for one year and then for another four years he worked with the Public Works Department as he wanted to further explore the field of engineering. After that he made the decision to get the prerequisite qualifications.
"I was trained at Miami Dade Community College doing design classes. From there I transferred up New England School of Technology where I finished my Associates and Bachelors of Science in Architecture Building Technology," he said.
One of his visions for the future of his career is seeing the Virgin Islands saturated with beautiful buildings at the hands of his designing. "Photography will continue as a pass time thing but I’d like to be more known for my passion and skills in architecture."
He says he has an eye for the nice things in life and with his ultimate dream of seeing the VI with creative designed houses and other buildings he is currently working on his own dream house which he hopes will be a model piece for others to follow.
"I would love to see modern designs around," he said.
To the other side of Mr Adams, he said that he has taken the decision to take life more seriously and is one that is committed to Christianity. "I am a church boy and have been taking life more seriously as far as God is concerned. I spend a lot of time around family. I don't do the much clubbing and those things anymore… I spend quality time with family," he said.
He is a person who loves nature and the wonders of the world and hopes to one day be able to do some amount of traveling while maintaining his business as currently work demands would not allow for such.
"I do some amount of island hopping right here, I love our beaches here and I always say many of us don't appreciate what we have here but the BVI has beautiful beaches and places of interest," he said, even noting that he is slowly getting into the surfing arena as he aims to become involved in some of the extreme wonders of a social life.
His advice to youths is, "Whatever you want to achieve in life don't let anyone tell you that you cannot do it or hold you back from doing it or even yourself… don't doubt yourself from going after your dreams. People may not support you fully at first but the more you stick with it from your heart and with a passion then the sky is the limit.”
