“I Love a challenge,” said Kerston A. Marquis as he tells his story of how he has elevated from being a popular guy holding a shaving machine as a barber to being in the office of the Department of Customs as an accountant.

Our Young Professional Kerston A. Marquis is a 25 year old son of the Virgin Islands’ soil. Having lived here within these shores for all his life he knows what it means to love home and to be a testimony of success and determination.

While going through High School he plunged into the business of being a barber from the age of 17 years old. It is something that is in his family life and he picked it up from a very early stage as he was the one cutting his dad’s hair on a regular basis.

He did this as his profession up to about approximately one year ago when he decided to put barbering as a secondary career and moving on to doing something that he thought would challenge his young brain and bring out the best in him.

“I love barbering, it is a profession but I was feeling that I was stagnated in that kind of job with nowhere else to go but to be there with the machine in my hand. I needed to use my brain, I need to challenge myself to reach my fullest potential in life so I when job hunting,” said Mr Marquis.

He said that along the way it was a rough road, as he has had really tough times. He went on to college where he started studies in computer science but was forced to stop and aims to continue when he secures enough funds and other resources.

“I don’t see stopping as a bad thing, everyone has their challenge in different ways but I was not going to run from mine. I will be going back very soon to complete what I started and I will be moving on from there to further qualifying myself in the accounting field,” he said.

He also professes the skills of a design artist. It was something he once did to help him make an honest dollar as he attended college. However sadly he was forced out of that job market when his laptop was stolen at college. This has somewhat come as a hard blow as he has not been able to secure the necessary funds to get another to keep his imaginative creative skills flowing and earn in that field.

Asked where he sees himself another five (5) to ten (10) years Young Professional Kerston A. Marquis said that while he will be continuing to elevate himself to the highest level that life would allow him as an accountant, he wants to be the owner of a modernized barber shop.

“No I have no intentions of giving up my daily job but having my own barber shop is a dream that I want and will work to see it come to fruition,” he said. He also feels that owning his own business would be a great opportunity for him to give others a stepping stone in life. “I would be able to give persons who love the skill at least something to start their life off or continue life,” he said.

Today he leads a very simple life, he like many young men his age loves to hang on the block with his peers, do the things that matter in growing up as a rounded person. He however is very mindful of the friends he keeps as he believes that friends do have a great influence on one’s progress in life.

When he is not with his friends on the block, which is not very often, you can be sure to find him spending a lot of time in the gym. His favourite gym is the one at the Save the Seed Centre. “I love being at the gym in my spare time,”

Given the opportunity of being an inspiration to youths of today, Mr Marquis had this message, “Whatever you love pursue it. The moment you get the opportunity do not let that moment pass because once the moment goes that might have been your only chance. But also never give up, always believe in yourself.”
